On a financial level. Gravity is produced by the British company Heyday films, and BBC Films have a hand in Saving Mr. Banks.

The Redford snub = :(

Not a great day for Dallas Buyers Club, Her, and Inside Llewyn Davis.

American Hustle is an awards-season monster.

Her and Dallas Buyers Club were eligible and for the latter even some screeners have been sent out. But I just have to assume that still not enough have seen them.

I am a tad surprised they nominated Oprah.

Come on, though, nobody in their right mind should really classify Gravity and Saving Mr. Banks as British films. All I can say is that it must have been a bad year for British movies to include those clearly American productions.

Oh, I don't disagree. It is a bit absurd to see Gravity competing against The Selfish Giant.

With any luck, I think Philomena will win Outstanding British Film anyway.

I notice Stories We Tell was snubbed in Best Documentary. :( I am presuming it was eligible.

I am surprised they nominated both Alex Gibney films in this category.

The total snubbage of Her and Dallas Buyers Club is sorta baffling. I really want Amy Adams to get that Oscar nom next week, tho. Make it happen!

So look like 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, and Captain Phillips are the pretty clear top 4 in the race.

I don't think it's as ridiculous as you make it out to be, particularly when we consider BAFTA's criteria. From over on Awards Daily:

Quote:
The specific BAFTA rules about what qualifies as a British film are:

To be eligible, a film must have significant British creative involvement and be certified as British

Only exceptionally will a non-certified film be considered. Final decisions on eligibility rest with BAFTA’s Film Committee

Most of Gravity’s film crew (e.g. composer Steven Price, editor Mark Sanger, production designer Andy Nicholson), producers (David Heyman of Harry Potter fame is a major producer), and film locations (shot at Pinewood and Sherwood Studios in the) are British. So Gravity easily qualifies as a British film under the BAFTA criteria.

When the producers are British, the film crew is British, and it was shot in Britain, it pretty easily qualifies as a British film in this case.

Peace,
Mike

I wasn't suggesting that it doesn't meet their criteria. But when you think of a British movie, you don't automatically think of the Alfonso Cuaron-directed, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock starrer, Gravity.

Exactly. Obviously it meets their financial/logistical criteria, which...fine. But on a common-sense level, it feels a bit absurd to say, "Gravity, oh, what a terrific British film!"

Post Re: BAFTA nominations
Notable things for me:

- American Hustle missed out on an editing nomination

- Wolf of Wall Street continues to grow stronger, with Best Director and Best Actor noms for Marty and Leo, as well as a Best Editing nom for Thelma (totally didn't expect this).

- Gravity leads with the most nominations, and nabbed a Best Original Screenplay nomination - pretty impressive! I hope this is a sign to come for the Oscars.

- American Hustle was nominated in all four acting categories here - it may be able to pull off this feat at the Oscars, which would be really impressive. It would be two years in a row that a David O. Russell film has actors nominated in all four categories. This would be especially impressive since the last time a film accomplished this was in 1981 (the film "Reds").

Overall, man, this is a REALLY strong year for film! All the acting categories don't have enough room to recognize all of the talent this year - the categories are far from settled, and I could make lists far longer than 5 of performances deserving of attention. And a terrific year for film overall, in my opinion.

Peace,
Mike

Have no idea what to make of those. 12YAS wins Best Film but Gravity gets British Film when Philomena was tailor made to win that category based on the history of it. And Philomena beats 12YAS in screenplay.

The biggest takeaways is that Picture is now 12YAS v Gravity, Actor is Ejiofor v McConaughey and Blanchett/Cuaron are locks

But we knew all that before.

I think basically the majority likes Gravity more than 12 Years a Slave, but not awarding it BP feels like being a racist asshole. It is the right choice to win and it will win BP. I also think Ejiofor will win Actor at the Oscars.
