Oprah will buy her win. Otherwise she will denounce the Academy as racist and from Switzerland.

Meryl Streep would murder Oprah, but because of the white guilt, I think Oprah will be in with a small chance. Fucking chat show host.

Honestly, Oprah's role isn't even that memorable. I was more touched by Octavia's in Fruitvale and she was onscreen less. Also, I think her role in Beloved was more interesting than this limited wife role.

If the 12 Years momentum keeps up then it seems like Lupita Nyong'o will also get a surefire nom in this category.

I would love to see that happen. After her nomination for An Education she's been consistently robbed of nominations for other great performances, such as in Never Let Me Go and Shame.

Warners is starting a nomination campaign for Scarlett Johansson in Her, which would make history as the first nomination for a non-flesh and blood performance if it happened.

I'd be surprised if Mulligan got a nom for Llewyn Davis. She's strong when on screen, but her screentime is barely 15 minutes.

Can I just use Arkin for everything now?

No. Not close at all. Because you see her face 95% of the movie, and her body like 60% of the movie.

After seeing 12 Years A Slave there's absolutely no question in my mind that Lupita Nyong'o is winning this. Like, it's not even going to be close.

Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
Octavia Spencer, Fruitvale Station
Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels' The Butler

At the moment I'm seeing....

Sally Hawkins "Blue Jasmine"
Jennifer Lawrence "American Hustle"
Carey Mulligan "Inside Llewyn Davis"
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave"*
Oprah Winfrey "Lee Daniels' The Butler"

Only alternatives I see happening...
Julia Roberts "August: Osage County"
Octavia Spencer "Fruitvale Station"

* projected winner

This category is still fairly weak. I can't see the Coen Brothers missing on an acting nomination for "Davis" and Mulligan is their best shot. Liek I said in the Best Actress thread "August" really needs to pick up to get noticed and for Roberts to have any chance at a nomination. Spencer probably won't happen if Jordan doesn't happen, though if the film gets both picture AND director noms, then maybe.

It would be incredibly unfair to award her a nomination after not giving a nomination to Andy Serkis for LOTR: The Two Towers. If there was ever a role where someone deserved a nom while not personally appearing on screen, it's him.

My predictions:

Oprah, The Butler (lock)
Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave (lock)
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle (early word is saying she's best in show)
June Squibb, Nebraska
Sarah Paulson, 12 Years a Slave (if the Academy loves the movie, I think this will happen)

I don't think Julia Roberts will make it due to category confusion. Though I do think the last two spots are vulnerable so there's potential for someone like Octavia Spencer to make it in.
