Having not seen Life of Pi nor Hugo, I gotta give this one to Inception. I honestly think, although groundbreaking in some capacity, the effects in Avatar are overrated. Never once do I believe the blue people are real.
Davy Jones in Pirates 2, I thought that was make up, that's damn impressive.
The tiger in Life of Pi, yes I have not seen the film, but from the previews, that tiger actually look real.

Re: BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: favorite nominee (2009-2012)
I thought Avatar looked fantastic from frame to frame. Yes, it looked far more like a video game than anything we might expect to see in the real world (not at all surprising considering that we're dealing with sci-fi/fantasy), but the level of detail in the CGI was incredible. In the realm of CGI effects, nothing since has worked on such a high level or with such a huge scope.

That's kind of the point though, no? Or am I just unaware of the part of the world where people can use their hair to plug themselves into others/animals/nature? Anyway, I have to agree with all the comments on Davy Jones and Richard Parker (and Caesar as well, for that matter). Insanely impressive work on all fronts.

I guess I'm in the growing minority that still loves the shit out of Avatar, warts and all. I mean, it's not like those warts weren't apparent when the film was first released.

The one single effect that really meant a revolution as far as fully CGI characters with emotions go, that was Gollum.

Gollum was a good effect that's for sure.

I am not a big fan of Avatar, but I can't deny the visuals were great.
