 Who will win Best Director?
I'm thinking it's between Russell and Lee, and I'll go with Lee in a minor surprise in a unpredictable year.

Russell, with SLP also winning Picture. If Argo remains the frontrunner probably Lee.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
Now this will be the more interesting category of the night, and we might not get much of an idea for the next month, as Affleck could easily take DGA and BAFTA and leave the rest of the lineups with nothing. Totally wild.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
I do not believe Zeitlin and Haneke are in serious contention.
1. Spielberg 2. Lee 3. Russell

Biggestgeekever wrote: Affleck via write-ins. This. But seriously, I'm not confident in any prediction at this point. I guess Spielberg by default? After all, Lincoln is the most-nominated movie of the year. And looking at the rest of the competition... Haneke: Maybe? The trouble is that it's hard to find a precedent for a director winning for such a small film in the scheme of awards season. Lee: Not feeling there's enough passion behind him for a second win. Russell: Probably the second best shot behind Spielberg, but winning for a comedy is hard, and his reputation might come back to bite him. Zeitlin: No.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
I don't see Russell winning now after SLP not being able to win Ensemble at SAG. It's between Spielberg and Lee.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
I dunno, there seems to be zero passion behind Lee and Spielberg's name probably plays better with the Academy.
Also, has there ever been a director to win BD twice without winning BP?

Re: Who will win Best Director?
Yes, once before, although I can't remember the name right away. Also it's hard to detect passion for anyone else when all the passions are going to Argo and Affleck only.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
I also found this out:
3 of the 4 Oscars John Ford won for Best Directing were for non-Best Picture Winners.
1935 The Informer 1940 Grapes of Wrath 1941 How Green Was My Valley (won Best Picture as well) 1952 The Quiet Man

Re: Who will win Best Director?
It is interesting though that either Spielberg or Lee could get another Oscar for directing a non-BP winner. Of course, Lincoln could still take the big one. What a strange year.

Re: Who will win Best Director?
Darth Indiana Bond, please at least tell me you are basing your opinion on having watched several of Ford's films and not just Quentin Tarantino's rant...
