National Board of Review Awards awards
The first major non-Guilds precursor....
Last year Hugo won, the year before it was The Social Network.
What do you expect there to happen this year?
They usually love high-profile picks, so I'm thinking Lincoln will get Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. However, Best Picture will go to Argo and maybe Best Ensemble as well. I expect Jennifer Lawrence to pick up Best Supporting Actress.

Giving PTA Best Director here would seem to fit their recent "slightly different than the rest" choices in BD

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
I feel like, more often than not, the NBR just picks their Best Director by spinning a wheel with all the big contenders that year and choosing what it lands on, which is how we get Eastwood winning for INVICTUS (His only Directing win from these guys, I might add!), or Michael Mann for Collateral. They have been making a little more sense the last two years though.

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
Michael Mann winning for Collateral is an amazing choice. Just because a choice is out of step with Oscar doesn't mean it's just random B.S.

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
I believe they might give Clint a rest this year, between Trouble with the Curve's beyond mediocre reception and the Republican convention fiasco. And it is not a film he directed.

Although I do believe there will be one "surprise" in their top ten, a film not on many award-season radars or at least seen as also-also-rans. My bet is Promised Land. Other options include Arbitrage, A Late Quartet, Not Fade Away, On the Road, Quartet, A Royal Affair, and Seven Psychopaths.

Or are we just talking Picture, with all of the talk about Clint I'm confused.

Wow, Zero Dark Thirty is definitely the frontrunner at this point.
Also their list is pretty awesome. Love the inclusion of Wallflower and Looper, which I didn't expect. Both are two of my favorite movies of the year.

Yeah, Cooper is simply terrific in Silver Linings. A very unexpected display of talent that should certainly be rewarded with a nomination.

The Hobbit is out. If they had Django, then they definitely had TH screening too.

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
Bradley Cooper is in no way, shape, or form superior to Daniel Day-Lewis (and he is easily outshone by Jennifer Lawrence in his film), but I s'pose it is nice to see a left-field choice. Nice to see Ann Dowd's memorable turn in Compliance revived. Another Hathaway snub. The Life of Pi snub: Moonrise Kingdom only being included on the list of independent films may be a bit frustrating for Focus Features. The top ten is almost ruined by the curious inclusion of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Helps make this list much more interesting. Especially when it got in over something like The Master. I'm pretty ecstatic over its inclusion. And it's really cool to see Ann Dowd win for Compliance. Haven't seen the film yet as I haven't had an opportunity to but it looks great and I've heard great things about her performance. Thank God something is taking over the front-runner status from Lincoln. Though honestly I'm unsure if the Academy will award it Best Picture when they just awarded Bigelow's The Hurt Locker not long ago.

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
Magnolia needs to start campaigning for Ann Dowd. She's been doing the campaigning herself, using her own money and sending out DVD's of the film.

Re: National Board of Review Awards anticipation
These are some fantastic nominations and wins.
Great to see Django in there, looks like it won't disappoint. Not surprised that The Master or The Hobbit didn't make it, they won't figure much in the Oscar race.
Love the fact Looper received some recognition. It deserves it.
Happy for Zero but still think it will be this years Social Network.
