 Re: Best Actress 2011
Glenn Close has more than a chance as well. She's playing in drag!
Streep, Williams, Theron look solid. I don't know if Dunst or Mara can get in; Olsen seems likelier than either of them. And Viola Davis probably has more of a shot than Stone Cold Fox.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
I read she was going lead and Octavia Spencer supporting.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
I dunno, Streep hasn't won in almost thirty years and is playing a historical figure (with prosthetics and an accent!) in a Weinstein film.
I think it'll come down to the two of them, anyway.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
Heh, Streep has been a lock for a nom ever since she has been announced in that role. If the performance is on par with Doubt/Julie & Julia, no way they snub for her an Oscar again.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
I assume almost no one will see Dunst's performance. Lars' films have a limited audience in general, and this one is getting Magnolia's standard on-demand-then-a-few-theatres release.
I'll say:
Close Davis Mara Streep Williams
Alternate: Kaya Scodelario

I don't see Dunst having a shot at all for the reasons Gun said.
I'll say:
Streep Williams Close Davis Olsen

 Re: Best Actress 2011
Is Knightley supporting or lead in A Dangerous Method? Because she's getting nominated, IMO.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
"She's black" is the only thing Viola Davis has going for her, Magnus? I would think "substantial praise" and "in a hugely popular film" and "past nominee" are also valid. lol. Good lord. And in regards to her competing with Emma Stone...I adore Emma Stone and thought she was delightful in The Help but she's not getting nominated under any circumstances.
Anyway, early predictions: Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Viola Davis, The Help Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady Charlize Theron, Young Adult

 Re: Best Actress 2011
From reactions at TIFF, Glenn Close's performance is getting a solid reaction, but Elizabeth Olsen is building a huge amount of goodwill built up going into the Oscars. The momentum on this one could catapult this into a frontrunner. Based on early reactions, Streep may be the only one that can stop her from winning.
Keira isn't getting in anymore imo. Very subdued reaction to A Dangerous Method here at TIFF. I think she'll get overlooked...

 Re: Best Actress 2011
I think the race will be extremely close here, like between Winslet and Streep in 2008 or between Streep and Bullock, only this time between Close and Streep (with Olsen being in Hathaway's posotion from Rachel Getting Married in 2008).

Close has one problem: almost no one is going to see her film.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
True. Also the huge British support and the Weinsteins will help Streep.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
IMO, Michelle Williams shouldn't be ruled out. If My Week with Marilyn connects, she could win. She's playing the ultimate Hollywood legend, it's being handled by the Weinsteins, and this would be her third nomination.
Could the fact Streep is playing a conservative icon (albeit an English one) hurt her chances at all?

 Re: Best Actress 2011
The issue with Glenn Close's case is that she gives a great performance, but apparently the film itself isn't outstanding.
Also, no one seeing her performance will be a big issue. Out of all of the TIFF gala premieres, the Albert Nobbs one was one of the easiest to get tickets too...

Davis is getting a Nod because she pretty much got flat out raves from just about every critic for the movie just like she did when she hot a nod for Doubt. It also helps that The Help was a huge hit. Her being black has nothing to do with it.

Olsen could get a nod but I don't see her winning. Kirsten Dunst has at least as much of a chance of a nomination, imo.

 Re: Best Actress 2011
Olsen has no shot at winning. It's basically Streep vs. Close at this point.

Why are you so dismissive of everything? Such a wet blanket. It was a widely praised performance in a film that made a crapload of money. And it would make her only the second black woman to win Best Actress. AND she's a past nominee.

I really hope that Streep doesn't win for The Iron Lady. Based on the trailer it looks dreadful.
