Best Picture of the Year
THE ARTIST (traditional wins over contemporary here)

Best Achievement in Directing
Michel Hazanavicius, THE ARTIST (DGA usually matches here)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Jean Dujardin, THE ARTIST (acting is no words is always a plus)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis, THE HELP (gained momentum after SAG win)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Christopher Plummer, BEGINNERS (nobody comes close)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Octavia Spencer, THE HELP (raking up the prizes in other awards, so no contest here either)

Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
THE DESCENDANTS, screenplay by Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash (most human screenplays usually win here)

Best Writing (Original Screenplay)
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, written by Woody Allen (The most magical screenplay of the year)

Best Animated Feature Film
RANGO (all the way)

Best Foreign Language Film
A SEPARATION (Iran) (Best critical acclaim of the best)

Best Achievement in Cinematography
THE TREE OF LIFE, Emmanuel Lubezki (even those who hate this movie say that this is the only redeeming factor of the movie, and the cinematography is where this film stands out)

Best Achievement in Art Direction
HUGO, (not only big and elaborate, but also well loved)

Best Achievement in Costume Design
THE ARTIST, Mark Bridges (no stand outs here, but the best picture momentum should shift this way)

Best Documentary Feature
PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY (taking home lots of other documentary prizes)

Best Documentary Short
THE TSUNAMI AND THE CHERRY BLOSSOM (a toss up between this and Saving Face, this I give the edge here cause not only was it a festival favorite, but also is the most artful of the bunch)

Best Achievement in Film Editing
THE ARTIST (usually matches best picture, so there)

Best Achievement in Makeup
THE IRON LADY (the makeup made Streep into Thatcher)

Best Achievement in Music (Original Score)
THE ARTIST, Ludovic Bource (It's the only thing you hear in the movie, need I say more)

Best Achievement in Music (Original Song)
THE MUPPETS, "Man or Muppet" (It's the turning part of the story, so easy win here)

Best Short Film (Animated)
THE FANTASTIC FLYING BOOKS OF MR. MORRIS LESSMORE (the longest usually wins here, and is easily the most innovated of the bunch. And being dialogue free and poignant gives this the big advantage too).

Best Short Film (Live Action)
THE SHORE (toss up between Raju and this, I this one not only has a filmmaker with previous experience in motion picture, but also the most human and honest of the bunch, and best loved)

Best Achievement in Sound Editing
WAR HORSE (war films win this category, always)

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
HUGO (Sound mixing is another story, and Hugo with it's grand scale in sound quality and music, give it the edge here)

Best Achievement in Visual Effects
RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (not only are they visual effects, but also effective performances, like Gollum)
