Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread - NEW POLL
With Slumdog sweeping everything and the wounds still healing from TDK and WALL-E, I'm having more fun looking to next year's race.
There are of course 2 or 3 smaller films that slip under the radar completely.
Pick 10

I bet anything that not all of the final five will actually be on that poll.
No one thought of Slumdog a year ago.

No one thought of Slumdog a year ago. In your contender thread, you had 3 of the 5 listed in your preliminary. So it was really Slumdog and F/N that came late in the game.

No one thought of Slumdog a year ago. I doubt 5, but probably 3, maybe 4.

Taylor Hackford (about Nevada brothels) and Jason Reitman (Clooney stars) both have films coming out this year as well, but I ran out of space.

 Re: 2009 Best Picture Prospects
I'm disappointed Biutiful (Alejandro González Iñárritu, Javier Bardem) and The Special Relationship (third film in Peter Morgan's Michael-Sheen-as-Tony-Blair series) aren't on the poll. I have a feeling Matt Damon could win his first acting Academy Award for The Informant, as long as it's not one of those Soderbergh films no one can get into except Soderbergh himself. The role sounds great. Mark Whitacre (born May 1, 1957) was the President of Archer Daniels Midland's BioProducts Division from 1989 to 1995. He came to public attention in 1995 when it became known that he had been acting as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which was investigating Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) for price fixing. With Whitacre, the FBI had the highest-level executive to turn whistleblower in U.S history. After his role as an informant became known by the company, Whitacre came under investigation for embezzling money from ADM, and was convicted for his role in the price-fixing case and pled guilty to fraud. As a result, Whitacre spent over eight years in federal prison. "Noble" informant revealed to be a criminal himself, embezzling money from the company he blew the whistle on. Plus, Matt put on weight for the role.

I think Terrence Malick will get some recognition again.

But I looked around and couldn't find a start date.

But I looked around and couldn't find a start date. I sure hope it's ready in time. I'm a huge fan of Peter Morgan and would love for him to win an Academy Award (Best Original Screenplay, perhaps). He's obviously an Academy favorite after The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, and Frost/Nixon. Plus, with The Special Relationship, there will be goodwill spillover from The Queen (since, in a certain respect, it's a "sequel"). Casting will be key, though, seeing as Bill Clinton will be a major character (and perhaps W. as well).

 Re: 2009 Best Picture Prospects
Hmm, at first glance at the story for Shutter Island, I wouldn't think it would strike a cord with the academy. but then i saw the cast... Leonardo DiCaprio Mark Ruffalo Ben Kingsley Emily Mortimer Michelle Williams Patricia Clarkson Jackie Earl Haley Max von Sydow

 Re: 2009 Best Picture Prospects
I don't see Shutter Island winning Picture or Director, but I definitely believe it will be nominated for both. At this point.

Only thing stopping it is the film itself. Ben Kingsley isn't a good omen either

Under the right director, Kingsley still can pull of amazing performances. Whoever doesn't believe me - watch House of Sand and Fog. Terrific turn.

Yeah, it's too bad he picks scripts like the hybrid child of Kate Hudson and Nicolas Cage
