Let's not go overboard here after the early reviews. A nomination for Cameron would already be a triumph for Avatar. It could very likely win four techs (two Sound, Visual, and Makeup) as Terminator 2 did; it may even have a chance at editing like Matrix did, but is not really in position to win one of the 8 major categories. This is still sci-fi, not Titanic, and it took three times for LOTR to break through.

Heh, that said there's a better shot for Cameron winning Director than for Avatar winning Picture, no?

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Director winner!
I think Tarantino could pull of a win.
I don't think Up in the Air is going to get quite enough support for it to sweep the Oscars (it's currently slated to win Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and maybe even Supporting Actress) after being a frontrunner for so long (since the beginning of November), and until I see Avatar, I'm thinking Cameron won't pull off a win for his first post-Titanic endeavor.
Think about it: QT's overdue, this is easily his most "Oscar-y" film yet, Basterds is a movie that held a ton of appeal to both the masses and critics (aka the perfect balance between those who would want a film like Avatar to win and those who would want a film like UITA to win), and it has nothing working against it (whereas Avatar has blue aliens and "it's a video game!", Precious has backlash, UITA has too-much-support-too-early syndrome, Hurt Locker was seen by six people).
I mean, it's too early to really tell, but UITA winning BP and Tarantino nabbing BD wouldn't surprise me.

I voted for Tarantino. He's long overdue and IB is a perfect chance.

Re: Straight-Up: Predict the Best Director winner!
I'd think Cameron, Tarantino, and Bigelow all have bigger chance of winning BD than Reitman. Even among those who cast their ballot for Up in the Air for BP, I think a big portion of them will choose a more "showy" director to vote for.
