 Awards that were well deserved...
...other than Slumdog...
Credit where credit is due:
- Kate Winslet deserved hers. - P. Cruz deserved hers (maybe Katie Holmes should break up with Tom Cruise, that's when they seem to win Oscars) - Man on Wire - The Duchess for costumes (great acknowledgement there!) - animated features: Wall-E... it still is the best of the lot - Art Direction: Benjamin Button - Visual Effects: Benjamin Button

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
My favourite award of the night, and perhaps the most deserved in my mind, was Dustin Lance Black. It made me the most happy of the evening.
Also really deserving: Kate Winslet for Best Actress Benjamin Button for Visual Effects (I am still amazed by the work they did on Pitt - truly extraordinary) Wall-E for Animated Feature (one of the best films of the year)
There were other deserving wins as well, those were just a few of my highlights.
Peace, Mike

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
I would have been happy to see Rourke win for nostalgia, but Sean Penn really was the best actor of the the nominated roles - - he deserved the win.
Kate Winslet has done better work in many other movies, she didn't deserve it for this role - - but then none of the nominees did.

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
Cruz and Ledger were well-deserved.
Penn was not as much, but still a great turn.
Winslet didn't deserve.
WALL-E deserved the win.

Dude, you simply liked Winslet naked for the first half an hour of the film, admit it!!

I liked The Reader too. It certainly stays with you longer than Slumdog (though, I didn't dislike Slumdog by any means)
I'd rank the five like this: 1. Milk - ***.5/**** 2. Frost/Nixon - ***.5/**** 3. The Reader - ***/**** 4. Slumdog Millionaire - ***/**** 5. Benjamin Button - **/****

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
I still haven't seen The Reader, but I absolutely adore Kate and I loved her in Revolutionary Road, so I'm going to call her win "well-deserved."
Also, Heath and Penelope were the proper winners of their categories.
The only movie I saw in Actor was Benjamin Button, so I can't really say. I must see Milk on DVD ASAP.
And, of course, you all know how I feel about Slumdog.

I think Langhella was better than both Rourke and Penn...but he had no chance.

You saw Frost/Nixon! Oh right. Yeah, well. I thought Langella was terrific but I don't think I'd have wanted him to win an Oscar for that performance.

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
What a category for Best Actor. I loved Mickey Rourke. The dude poured his heart into that role. But even I couldn't deny Sean Penn's excellence in Milk. And Frank Langella shouldn't have been counted out. Without Milk, he may have won.
I'm not content that Winslet's first win is for The Reader, but overall, she deserves an Oscar any day of the week. And it's not like she was terrible in the role. If it wasn't for her, The Reader would be lesser-known than it already is.
I gotta say I was pretty happy with all of the acting wins (aside from the aforementioned Winslet side-note on The Reader). And WALL-E of course. After hearing the Best Song nominees, I still can't believe The Wrestler missed out there, most likely just because it was submitted with a video of the end credits, instead of a big dance number (Jai Ho). Not knocking Jai Ho, because it was good, but you know... The Boss does own.

Song, Special Effects, Makeup, Supporting Actor, Animated Film.
Yeah, that's pretty weak.

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
Wall-E (Best movie of the year) Kate Winslet (Excellent performance and even though it wasn't her best work, it's about bloody time she won) Sean Penn Dustin Lance Black Slumdog Millionaire (Did not deserve all 8 awards, but I thought it deserved it over Milk and The Reader)

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
deserved compared to the noms, or literally compared to everything or everyone competing with it?
If it's the latter, there aren't too many... Ledger I guess, Milk for O. Screenplay perhaps, and Benjamin Button for Makeup/Art Direction (VFX would've gone to Cloverfield). If I were doing the Oscars, I'm not sure Slumdog would've won anything.

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
Ledger WALL-E in Animated Benjamin Button in Art Direction, Makeup, & Visual Effects
And although I preferred Rourke, I'm not complaining at all about the Penn win. Both were excellent, deserving performances.

Re: Awards that were well deserved...
If strictly based on the nominees...
Best Picture - Slumdog Best Supporting Actor - Ledger Best Supporting Actress - Cruz Best Song - Jai Ho (though non-nominees were superior) Visual Effects - Button Makeup - Button Animated Film - Wall-E Best Original Screenplay - Milk (yeah, it was flawed, but alot of work went into that screenplay) Best Adapted Screenplay (of the nominees, Slumdog is actually above par)
