First Oscar nom for Apatow coming?
I think many here would say that Apatow is overdue (for screenwriting). Two success stories, financially and critically. Hell, Knocked Up was one of the most critically lauded films of 2007 as far as I remember.
Funny People seems like a less raunchy and more serious effort. So, provided it gets a similar kind of acclaim as The 40-Year-Old Virgin or Knocked Up and isn't a box-office flop (which defnitely won't happen) - I think Apatow's looking at his first Best Original Screenplay nom.

I also hear James L Brooks is suing Apatow.

Funny People could do it, but it needs to actually be good. Material like that is VERY ripe for easy manipulation. Not unlike Robin Williams' or Will Smith's horrid attempts at comedy-drama.

I don't think so.
And frankly, if Knocked Up couldn't pull it off, I'd rather Apatow go down as one of the best unrewarded writer/directors unless of course the material really deserves it but I'm weary of any effort surpassing Knocked Up and to some extent, 40YOV.

I dunno... I think the fact that the Academy had him and his Pineapple Express guys show up and do a skit indicates that they like them (not to mention, he had like a third-row seat). I think that if Funny People gets reviewed as well as his last two efforts, it'll get a Screenplay nod. Especially because it seems like a lot of this year's primary Oscar bait consists of adaptations.

Ricky Gervais' screenwriting/directing debut This Side of the Truth has been pushed back to 2010. That opens a spot for Funny People if its a hit.

But "the academy" doesn't run the show, the show's producers do and they do everything they can to pull in viewers.
