 Re: the why of slumdog
As much as I liked Milk and Frost/Nixon, they just haven't attracted the right attention. Blame their respective studios for the badly run campaign.
The Oscars go to the studio that puts the most dinero into its campaign. People do this for a living.
Fox Searchlight discovered it could turn Juno into a $100m+ hit by spending a few milli into an Oscar campaign that would get it a few noms. So, when Slumdog got rave reviews, it decided to milk the Juno strategy twice, but with more money this time. It's a low-risk, high-return investment. Good strategy. Fox doesn't give two shits about the Oscar, it's strictly financial.

 Re: the why of slumdog
The style is critic friendly, and the story is audience friendly, much more so than a film like Crash. It connects and strikes the chord with many people on various levels. With all the inevitable backlash and "overrated" calls, I find it amazing that it still sits at No. 34 in IMDb's top 250 list, the second highest from all 2008 films behind TDK, and one of the highest for a non-blockbuster BP winner.

 Re: the why of slumdog
It hasnt been that good a year. So this stands out. I prefer Frost Nixon and TDK to it, but I like it too. It kind of defaults as a front runner.

 Re: the why of slumdog
The real success story is Fox Searchlight. Sideways in '04, Little Miss Sunshine in '06, Juno in '07 and Slumdog in '08.

 Re: the why of slumdog
this was a very weak year. The only year this decade where I'd see Slumdog having a real shot at BP, let alone having a potential sweep, is '05.

A lot of people (myself included) love the film, even at KJ and AD where the detractors feel to be the loudest, considering it's nominated for BP at both places (even winning screenplay at AD). It's also ironic that it's the only BP overlap between us and academy. And nothing outside (box office, IMDb/Yahoo grade, etc.) suggests it's not loved by the general public either. So no need to worry.

You're just hating it because if you liked it then it would would feel you are supporting the white man's burden (even though for you it's mostly affluence) so you are having an inverse reaction to ... yeah. See where this is going? Actually I've decided to put all of the people on this site in buckets to easier prioritize my anger with the people here. I've placed you in the "bitter that TDK isn't nominated bucket", and that's how I see you

There's no bucket for Wall-E BP nomination, because I put all of those people in the "Clueless and Ridiculous" bucket.

 Re: the why of slumdog
Didn't he admit that?
I do wonder if WALL-E and TDK were really all that far apart, though. At least WALL-E had a Screenplay nomination. Nolan got shut out entirely.
