How do you think would the race between that and Slumdog Millionaire have turned out?

I think that if that had actually happened, we'd have a split (Slumdog winning Picture and NCFOM Director). I think No Country would have been slightly hurt by not having the frontrunner status for Best Supporting Actor (assuming Ledger would still be awarded over Bardem).

No Country had frontrunner status as BP once it landed at Cannes (for Slumdog, it was Toronto).

Slumdog would have won 2-3 awards.

sound, score, maybe editing.

It would have basically been this year's Juno, without the press that came along with Ellen Page. And it's box office would have been dampened greatly, probably 50%.

I think you all underestimate the fact that mass audiences actually like Slumdog Millionaire and give it good WoM...

I think you overestimate the fact that that matters.

But the only reason audiences even know about it is because it's won all these awards unchallenged. There would be no mass audiences to speak of if there was an actual Oscar type film soaking up its light. It's an movie shot in Hinglish Lect. :funny:

No Country would have still won most, if not all of the same critic groups. No Country has twice as many 100s on MC as Slumdog.

If anything, Slumdog would have been the real underdog this year, versus the pretend version of an underdog we're getting.

No Country would have sweeped most critics awards, I won't argue that.

It would have lost the Globe and likely would have lost BAFTA as well. Slumdog would have been a favorite for Editing and NCFOM probably wouldn't have been a favorite for Best Supporting Actor.

I'm not saying Slumdog defiitely would have won. This question actually genuinely interests me (as hypothetical as it is)...I dunno how it would have turned out, but I think Slumdog would have had a chance to upset it for BP. I'm sure NCFOM would have won BD.

I don't think Slumdog would have won in 2007, 2006, 2005, or 2004.

1999 would have been a good year for Slumdog.

No Country murders it. 90% of the reason Slumdog dominated this year is that the competition is MASSIVE FAIL. Button just isn't good. Milk is teh gay. Frost is a typical non factor nom. The Reader is LOL.

Slumdog would be the Little Miss Sunshine to No Country's Departed. #2 with a bullet and it might get the PGA, but never much chance to actually dethrone it.

Would have won in 2005 easily. They wouldn't have awarded Crash over it...

Brokeback would have won.

This is like one of the those comics with an infinite number of earths but with one thing changed on each version.

What if There Will Be Blood were released this year? Juno?

What if TDK were released last year?

TDK last year, still nothing.
TWBB this year, wins (of course)
Juno? Slumdog isn't even nominated (Fox Searchlight can't push both)

Yeah, we have to switch the films instead of just moving one down if they are from the same Studio, like if we're talking about Ratatouille and Wall-E.

You're pulling the audience card...even though this year has clearly shown that Oscars do not give a shit about the audience.

Not to mention, NCFOM had great WOM (among non-idiots).
i haven't met many people who talk about the movie and don't complain about its ending. Yes, the movie buff crowd loved it, but a lot of other people didn't. There's a reason why with its great roll-out campaign and a BP win, $75m was all it was able to manage.

My dad loved No Country For Old Men (as did I)

As for those who are bashing Lecter for the excess of threads: what else do we have to talk about this season? About how much Slumdog doesn't deserve to win...and that's about it

I dont mind all these threads. This stems from a conversation in another thread.

I think No Country would have beaten Slumdog this year. 2007 was much stronger all round, TWBB would have won this year too.

TDK would have had less of a chance if it came out last year.

Slumdog > No Country. The backlash against Slumdog is kinda ridiculous. Even more so than Juno last year, which was also great. Silly KJ.

Another thing, which would win Best Adapted Screenplay, considering Coen Brothers already won for Fargo?

I disagree about There Will Be Blood. Against Slumdog (which is passionate and accessible) the obtuse and difficult There Will Be Blood (hey that's why people liked it, is that it's complicated, right?) would likely always conquer.

The bleak has a disadvantage over the positive forward thinking frontrunner.

dark has won over light in all but two instances in the last 30 years (Annie Hall and Shakespeare in Love)?

IMO No Country is the better film though I have no problem with Slumdog or Juno. I like both. I just dont think Slumdog looks better due to the lack of great films this year.
