What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
Oscar win, that is. Just pick one!
I still haven't seen enough, so I'll report in two weeks or so.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
Penn for Actor as I want to see Rourke or Langella win.
Streep for Actress - want to see someone else win.
Otherwise not that enthused by this years awards.

Penn and Slumdog for anything.
I'm fine with Milk winning, just NOT Penn.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
Whoops. Ugh, I'm an idiot. I completely missed the "not." All right, REAL ANSWER: I don't want Slumdog Millionaire to win Best Original Score. I would much rather see Alexandre Desplat's "Benjamin Button" score rewarded or, better still, James Newton Howard's Defiance score. The best of the year. Those Joshua Bell violin solos... *drool*

Slumdog for Picture. I can see why they are going to give it the award, but i just really wish something else would upset it...

Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture. I would much prefer Milk or Benjamin Button, possibly even Frost/Nixon, just not this.

Whatever "win" will encourage you to make some sort of thread in protest or celebration...
I don't want one of those. No more Lecter threads.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
although I wouldn't have much of a problem with Slumdog winning, it is up against two stronger films (BB & Milk), and I'm really not to discontented by any of the other likely winners (although I doubt Winslet in The Reader is as good as Streep in Doubt), so Slumdog for BP would be my pick. Even if Fincher could just sneak in a Director win... something.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
As much as I would love to see David Fincher win or Slumdog lose best picture, I have to say Slumdog for best score...I mean seriously? How artistically challenged is the academy for giving best score to Slumdog? I guess all you have to do to win best score is insert a bunch of pop songs (one of which didn't even fit the theme and setting of the piece to begin with) and boom you get an award.

Wall-E for Screenplay. A joke on epic proportions.

( http://www.kottke.org/08/11/walle-screenplay) Whilst I realize that dialog isn't the only criteria, what I've read isn't that impressive. The story is basic and mostly told through visuals and sound, no dialog and the film is primarily structured around this (except for the pathetic human scenes which don't match previous work in Nemo, Incredibles, or Rat by a mile). The "magic" of the film (such that there is magic) is in the visuals, sounds, etc. In fact, if Wall-E was nominated for Picture I'd be like, "Okay I can see that!", I *still*, even if it swept all of the awards and I thought it was the best picture of the year, I could still NOT SEE giving it a nomination in Screenplay.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
but you need a story in place to implement those visuals and sounds, no? I can't really fault the film for being dialogue free.

Re: What win do you REALLY not want to happen this year?
On the whole, the story is not one of Wall-E's original or bright spots. Wall-E is about execution.
If originality was the only criteria, then it shouldn't be nominated. If dialog is the only criteria, then it shouldn't be nominated.
So why was it nominated?
Because people like the movie.
IMO it's a bunk nomination, not that others aren't, but it's bunk.
