Will The Dark Knight Returns Be Nominated For BP In 2011
Assuming we have the exact same enviroment (Box Office, Critical Response, Precursors , Crackerjack Supporting Performance), will the AMPAS bite and nominate The Dark Knight sequel for BP.

Honestly, I'd say at this point, No.. If they were going to do it, they would've done it with TDK and if anything, TDK Returns will have an uphill battle to climb in terms of outdoing TDK, unless sadly, a major star of the movie suffers the same fate as Heath Ledger.. I know you don't want to hear that or believe that Ledger was in fact the sole reason why TDK made what it did, but it is true.. It was the ultimate tribute to a great actor that will be sorely missed..

Rorschach wrote: Nope, unless it gets released in December. Then it has a chance. What does releasing it in December have to do with it?? If the movie really is THAT good, it shouldn't matter what month it's released in.. It's merely a foregone conclusion that the Academy just doesn't take comicbook movies seriously... Let's look at this from a different approach: How many 3rd movies in a trilogy outdo their predecessors?? Take TESB for example: A Bonafide classic that ushered in the phrase "Cliffhanger" back in the 80's when we didn't have the internet to spoil everything like now and you actually had to wait 3 years for the 3rd movie to find out the answers left hanging from the 2nd film.. When ROTJ came out, it was sort of a dissapointment compared to EMPIRE, especially the actors performances which seemed tired.. Nowadays, if TESB were made today in the world of the internet, the whole "I am your father" angle would've been spoiled to death with no element of surprise whatsoever.. How about the immortal classic JAWS?? When JAWS 2 came out in 78, it wasn't near as good as JAWS was.. I simply think Nolan wants TDK to be it's own standalone movie and will probably try a different approach with the 3rd movie if and whenever it's made..

It's called release strategy. It's been an Oscar practice for a long time.

The members of the Academy are simply out of touch.. Interestingly enough, I read last week in USA TODAY where they conducted a Poll to see how many younger viewers would watch the Oscars if in fact TDK was nominated for BEST PICTURE and the results were 71% said they would tune in if it were given the nod, but now that this has been flushed down the toilet, don't count on the ratings being very good because of that..

So unless Nolan & Co. decide to wait five and a half years and come back in Dec. 2013, we're looking at either a summer 2011 or 2012 release for the sequel. And let's be real, The Hobbit films would be an Oscar priority for WB, there's no way they would even think about pushing a Hobbit film and TDK2 in the same award season.

Let me ask you something: I sort of consider you the ultimate LOTR's fan, so do you feel that The HOBBIT should be broken up into 2 movies for being such a simplistic story when compared to the LOTR Trilogy cause it sounds to me by doing this, their trying to milk this thing for everything it's worth when breaking it into 2 parts which is really unnecessary??

It's hard to say. There's enough filler available from the Tolkien estate to make that film and its obviously an attractive goal to bridge The Hobbit to Fellowship of the Ring. But without knowing what Del Toro and Jackson (along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) have in store, I can't answer that question. Business wise, yeah, shit, they should make 3 Hobbit films. Why not?

LOL, no.
Not even with a December release date.

Re: Will The Dark Knight Returns Be Nominated For Best Picture?
No. Too much of TDK relied on Ledger... Whether because of his performance or otherwise to even speculate that the reception will be on the same level, let alone assuming the environment is the same.
WB was smart to go with Del Toro. If Jackson was directing I wouldn't consider Hobbit had a serious chance (too much of a been there done that) but with Del Toro... Whose Pan's was noticably viable for Oscar... The have a better shot.

What if Christian Bale dies before the film's release?

TDK was all about the performances. The story was too simple.
Maybe they could get it nominated... but I seriously doubt it.

Re: Will The Dark Knight Returns Be Nominated For Best Picture?
After this year, anything is possible. And I think some of you are brushing it away too easily. I bet if someone asked after Batman Begins if TDK could be nominated, should all the stars and planets align just right, you still would've said no. Of course... you would've been right. But if you had been asked if it could come close to a nomination, you would've said no.
Point is, the climate could be just right: weaker competition, everything working just right (great script, great acting, great Nolan direction, etc etc etc.), the critics and audiences loving it, and the Academy unable to ignore it this time. It could even be a make-up for snubbing TDK.
Of course, all of those elements have to happen. Lightning can strike twice.

The competition was weak. Really wweak. Otherwise something other than a movie with 60% at RT have gotten in instead, I suppose.

Re: Will The Dark Knight Returns Be Nominated For Best Picture?
I can't imagine the competition ever being this weak again for a film like TDK. There were no big-name, old reliable films or directors in the fray. And as Rorschach pointed out, WB now has bigger fish to fry with the 2 Hobbit films coming out.
Warner Brothers release date plans for TDK2 will be very telling.

I thought Hobbits were still stuck in 2012 and could easily go 2012/2013.

On top of the no Ledger thing, I have a hard time seeing TDK2 living up to the massive expectations it'll have. It can very well be great, but to ignite the passion and excitement for a BP run that TDK had, it'd have to be BETTER than TDK in a lot of eyes. Just not sure it's possible to one up the bar at this point. Think it's much more likely TDK2 falls to the 3rd superhero film curse

That's the best bet against it. But should it have all the right elements, I think people will be reminded of how TDK was snubbed in 2008 and that to right a wrong, TDK2 should be nominated.
Don't take that as "My God, yes it will be nominated!". I really mean EVERYthing has to come together. Weak competition, amazing movie, four star reviews. But it did happen once... and people will still be pissed about the TDK snub.
If all else fails, one of us will push Nolan down a flight of stairs. They can't ignore a director with a broken neck. Double the points if Bale goes down with him.

If a perfect storm like TDK couldn't do it, how likely could a more perfect storm happen?

I didn't say it would absolutely happen. I just said it could. There's obviously a great chance it will come together, we'll all be saying "I can't believe it's happening AGAIN!" and The Reader 2: Read Harder will steal the nomination.
