One of this award season's mysteries, IMO, is the total absence of Michael Sheen. While Frank Langella's complex, powerful turn as Richard Nixon may very well be the focal point of the film, Sheen also shines as David Frost. He expertly plays the character's transition from lightweight, in-over-his-head infotainment personality to dynamic, empowered journalist and his sparring with Langella is fascinating to watch.
Universal didn't even seem to push him at all and it boggles my mind, especially considering the overall strength of the film (Picture, Ron Howard, Langella, Peter Morgan's screenplay). In a season with plenty of category blurring, surely he could've been a powerful Best Supporting Actor contender (especially since the non-Heath slots were open enough for Michael Shannon to get in)... Universal missed a chance.
