Post Well, Kate can win for The Reader now...whatever
Kate Winslet is a great actress and has delivered her share of memorable performances in the past. With likely her 6th and 7th nominations happening this year, she is obviously getting closer to an actual win. I'm sure Kate's very good in The Reader, but...

I really don't want to see her win for that one. I haven't seen the movie. The performance might be (probably is) great. But I simply don't want her first win to be in the Supporting Actress category, especially in a FRAUD case like this one since it's obvious that she's the lead in that film.

If she wins for Revolutionary Road - fine. It's probably not her best turn or the most memorable one, but at least it'd be a Best Actress win for a movie with mostly solid reviews.

But her winning for The Reader would simply be the result of faulty category placement and the feeling that she's overdue and just has to be awarded. All things considered, The Reader doesn't strike me as a remarkable or memorable film. With a great likelihood it will be forgotten pretty soon. The reviews are rather mixed-to-decent and that is pretty much thanks to Winslet's turn even.

So, I just don't want Winslet to win for a likely average film, for a falsely categorized role and for Best Supporting after being nominated for 7 times overall. She deserves better than that! Give that Oscar to Penelope Cruz or Marisa Tomei.

Oh and I added the poll about the expected outcome.

I feel the same way, and agreeing with your last note I REALLY want Cruz to get her Oscar already.

Whitaker in Last King of Scotland was another case of category fraud that bugged me... not to mention the performance isn't even that great. It would've been the perfect year to give O'Toole his makeup award... sigh.

Having not seen Venus, I can't coment on that (it still hasn't been released here), but yeah...Whitaker was pretty good and I might have nominated him even, but winning? Nah. He was the best of the nominees I have seen, though (seen all of them except for O'Toole). The really good ones were actually not even nommed (Sacha Baron Cohen!).

DiCaprio should have won for Best Actor that year.

I hope you mean for The Departed!

Peter O'Toole was very good in a disappointing movie. He never stood a chance; the movie really seemed to turn people off. And not unreasonably.

Yes, of course The Departed.

O'Toole should have won for The Lion In Winter back in '68. Who beat him out anyway?

Cliff Robertson's awful Oscar-baiting in Charley. The fucker campaigned for it and it worked.

O'Toole kept getting gypped by going up against monster performances/performers. He lost to Gregory Peck in '62, John Wayne in '69, Marlon fuckin' Brando in '72, De Niro in '80, Ben Kingsley in '82. You can't get much worse luck than that.

Unless, of course, you're Richard Burton, and you're too dead to get a makeup Oscar.

DiCaprio should've been nominated for The Departed instead of Blood Diamond.

But I'd have awarded the win to Borat.

Well, O'Toole is very close. I'm not sure he'll get another chance after Venus...

Except for fucking '68 when he had no excuse losing to Robertson's bad work in a terrible movie.

You know, I could see why. It does take balls to do what he did, and he's fooled huge numbers of people.

Well, yeah. Except for that. Also Rex Harrison.

Yeah, Rex Harrison was bullshit, too. But at least that was a famous, memorable performance. As you saw above, nobody even remembers that loser Cliff Robertson.

And he simlöy managed to stay so convincing all the way through.

BTW, along with DiCaprio, I actually would ahve also given a Best Actor nom to Damon. The Departed features his career-best turn, IMO.

Indeed. I would have given a nom to Clive Owen as well. I thought he was very quietly devastating in Children Of Men.

she's gonna win one, but I can't figure out what it'll be for. I guess you should look at her competition as your basis... Best Supporting Actress has Penelope Cruz and Viola Davis as very strong contenders, and Best Actress has... Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, I guess. I suppose it could happen in either. Heck, I guess she could end up with none. She hadn't been the frontrunner in either category until the Globes.

I don't think she'll win for The Reader. She has to win for RR. Anne Hathaway can't become an Academy Award winner before Kate Winslet. Only Meryl can stop her from the win I feel.

Speaking about, when are ballots due to be returned?

Nomination ballots were due two days ago.

I saw RR today and she was mesmerizing, nothing short of amazing. I want her to win for that, and I've seen both Doubt and RGM and neither Anne (who is great though) or Meryl compare.

I have yet to see The Reader but I assume she doesn't compare to Penelope Cruz.

I SO wouldn't mind Cruz losing only to win next year for Almodóvar's new movie.
