How many nominations will the 6 biggies get?
You know which ones I'm talking about. During the recent years we didn't have a single movie to get 10 Oscar noms or more, but I think this is about to change this year! The Curious Case of Benjamin Button looks like a near-lock to make that and The Dark Knight has a solid chance too.
Here's what I'm thinking:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 13
Best Picture Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay Best Actor Best Cinematography Best Costume Design Best Make-Up Best Visual Effects Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Editing Best Art Direction Best Score
The Dark Knight - 10
Best Picture Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay Best Supporting Actor Best Editing Best Score Best Cinematography Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Visual Effects
Slumdog Millionaire - 6
Best Picture Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay Best Supporting Actor Best Cinematography Best Editing
Milk - 7
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Supporting Actor Best Original Screenplay Best Score Best Art Direction
Frost/Nixon - 5
Best Picture Best Adapted Screenplay Best Actor Best Editing Best Score
WALL-E - 6
Best Animated Picture Best Score Best Song Best Original Screenplay Best Sound Editing Best Sound Mixing
_______________________________________________________________________________
Reminds me of 2003...
Button & TDK = Return of the King & Master and Commander Slumdog Millionaire = Lost on Translation Milk = Mystic River Frost/Nixon = Seabiscuit

Slumdog should be the frontrunner for a score nomination.

Isn't Slumdog eligible for Score?

I think the fact they bothered to let it back in will bring it in. The Joker theme is the most iconic film music of the year without a doubt.

I've been puzzling here for a few minutes now, and the closest I can come to thinking of Joker's theme with be the waning strings every time he shows up. So, I'd hardly call anything from the score "iconic", other than the theme from Batman Begins. Though I don't think any movie music this year yet qualifies as "iconic".

Slumdog Millionaire could see double-digit noms.

That's a real stretch, though. The Sound thing just seems like typical CAS antics. Babel, Finding Neverland, Crash... I don't see three films getting double-digit nominations.

Re: How many nominations will the 6 biggies get?
Yeah, 10 is quite unlikely; but I do believe the margin between BB (or TDK) and Slumdog is going to be pretty small, and that will make Slumdog the firm frontrunner.

Re: How many nominations will the 6 biggies get?
Plus, that means it'd have to get in for both Sound/Sound Editing or take one of those and get a nom in Costume/Art. That seems like a reeeeal stretch. It's kind of like if Doubt gets a surprise nom in DGA tomorrow it'll be equal to Wall-E and Frost/Nixon. Yes, but how likely is it?

Nothing this year really screams iconic to me. Heck the last music piece that really is iconic to me is....Pan's?

The waning strings when he goes into his spooky bits.
TWBB's score was amazing, too.

Well, I got WALL-E, Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon right.
Was totally off on Slumdog, though.
