Post Benjamin Button Does Not Deserve A Best Picture Nomination
I never thought I'd say this about a David Fincher film but Benjamin Button should not be a BP nominee.

I know it's done well with the guilds (PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE, ASC) but I'd prefer its recognition to end there. Pull a Dreamgirls if need be. But it doesn't belong in the 5, and certainly not at the expense of either WALL-E or TDK.

I agree, actually. It definitely does not deserve a spot over either TDK or Wall-E, and I hope it misses.

I agree, though I liked it and want to see Fincher get nominated.

I've been toying lately with the possibility of it being snubbed. Hmm...

I guess I would also agree. I'd rather see films like RevRoad and The Wrestler have a chance at a nomination.

Button didn't make it into my top 10 but for some reason I'm kind of ok with the nomination... maybe because I've gotten so used to the idea as I always thought it was a no-brainer nominee.

It's not better than Wall-E, but I prefer it to what will likely be its four competing films. So I'm very supportive of it getting a nomination... although if for some reason it was replaced by Wall-E, that's a scenario I wouldn't complain about (but I'd much rather it replace Frost/Nixon).

The passion voting system should work against it.

I can see a possible situation where it leads all nominees but doesn't get BP

Best Director
Best Supporting Actress
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
Best Art Direction
Best Make-Up
Best Original Score
Best Visual Effects

Take out Supporting Actress and Cinematography, add Actor, and it looks good for a Dreamgirls scenario.

Now Milk is more difficult, because I really don't know how far into techs it can go.

Dreamgirls had 8 noms, but never a chance at more than 6 wins because it had three Song nominations, so this is different.

Loyal's scenario essentially says that it will have ten different Oscar noms and no BP nom, something that has never happened before. At least Dreamgirls also missed Director, Screenplay and Editing, all three biggies for BP.

If Button gets Director, Screenplay, Editing and one or two acting noms...I don't see a way for it to miss BP.

If anything, this is a year of firsts.

^ apparently Sydney Pollack's The Shoot Horses, Don't They? earned 9 nominations including Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay, failed to get a BP nom, and ended up 1-9 (won Supporting Actor)

I know that, but that was 9 noms, not ten. It was also less tech-heavy (Button is guaranteed a cpuple of wins in the tech department, Pollack wasn't as overdue at that point and it was also a once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

I was thiking Button would not get in too...but once it sweeped the guilds, I changed my mind.

Remember, Dreamgirls at least missed a WGA nom and Walk the Line missed a DGA nom.

The Guilds aren't holy. Last year proved that. And this year is even stranger.

Remove the "Not" from the title and this thread would be worth reading.

Frost/Nixon's still less exciting than the actual Frost-Nixon tapes.

I'm sure being an actual soldier storming the beach at Normandy was more exciting than watching Saving Private Ryan, but the Spielberg film is still very good.

Well, Frost vs. Nixon is a warfare of a kind...

It definitely doesn't deserve a nomination, but it's getting it anyways. Definitely not winning (Especially as it proves to merely be a decent-sized hit instead of a mega-hit), but I fail to see it missing a nomination. Milk, TDK and even F/N will fall out before it.

I could see it missing a screenplay nomination. Why would any knowledgeable writer vote it #1 in THAT category?
