Most Wins without a Best Picture win and other Oscar trivia
I have some questions on the Oscars here...
First of all what are the most wins a movie has managed without winning the Best Picture Oscar? I know that Cabaret is one of them for instance. It won 8 Oscars without winning Best Picture (which it lost against The Godfather). Any other examples when movies won more Oscars than the Best Picture winner in their year?
Another similar question is...What was the movie to get most nominations without actually getting a Best Picture nom? I'd assume that Cold Mountain ranks pretty high there with 7 nominations and neither a Best Picture nor a Best Director nom.
Anyone has an idea?

I saw the Cold Mountain question before, and I remember it isn't the highest one. Need to check. In the mean time, I think this could be a good Oscar trivia thread. Do you know that Grand Hotel (1932) is the only Best Picture winner that didn't even get another nomination? Back then, there are only 3 nominees per category except for Picture, but it is still quite interesting.

Cabaret has that record, the most wins without a best picture win.

You just gave me an idea for a modified title of this thread
Interesting thing with Grand Hotel, didn't know that.
1936 they started to have more than three noms per category, by the way.
And I think the highest number of movies to ever be nominetd for Best Picture in one year is 12 and that happened in 1935 and 1936.

it is by John Harkness.

Whenever we are on the topic of trivia, I'm always pissed about The Color Purple getting 11 nominations and not a single win. It's not like it lost to an equally great film.

I am not sure about Best Picture as I haven't seen Out of Africa yet, but Goldberg should have won Best Actress. Really, this is one of Spielberg's better films and while not a masterpiece it deserved more than 11 noms and zero wins.
However the Gangs of New York 0:10 snub makes me even more mad. As much as I liked The Pianist, Daniel Day-Lewis was much better than Adrien Brody.

Put of all films, you didn't put FOTR on the list. I'd expect it to be your prime example

I already used that as an example once today, when I brought up A Beautiful Mind. \:D/

However, it obviously doesn't happen often lately. I mean you mention Saving Private Ryan, but Shakespeare in Love got more nominations. I don't see a repeat of 2002 that soon.

Don't forget that the Turning Point ties that record too.
Also, here is another record.
The most Oscar wins that did not get a best picture nomination: The Bad and the Beautiful (5 wins).
The only best picture winner that did not win any other best picture category from other awards: Braveheart.

1985 was a tough year. In many was it feels a bit like this year. Witness and The Color Purple were defaintely worthy of a win. Out of Africa I think benefitted from the whole "majesty of the Oscars type thing".
If The Color Purple deserved anything, it's Whoopi Goldberg's amazing performance, which is amongst the best of the 1980s. It makes me happy that she won later on as a make-up, but come on... for Ghost?
Oprah Winfrey also didn't amazingly, but Angelica Huston was a deserved winner for Prizzi's Honor.
It's a travesty that Out of Africa beat The Color Purple, Ran AND Brazil for Art Direction.
It's a travesty that Spielberg wasn't nominated, and sad that Peter Weir, Akira Kurosawa and John Huston lost to Sydney Pollack.
