Post The Best Picture Challenge
There are only a handful of people who have seen , or plan to see , all of the best picture nominations, so why don't we try something different this year, and make a point to see all of them (even if they look boring), and get as many members as we can to make it a tradition every year. If I can do it , as somebody who really prefers waiting for the DVD or not bothering at all, hopefully some others can do it as well. If you have seen them all already, please post and let me know, and I'll add your name to the list. Don't be fibbing about it, if you really didn't see them all. Let's see how many members we can get before Oscar night is upon us. I'll add loyal, because he mentioned that he's seen them all.

What the hell is that all about? I normally wouldn't suggest illegal downloading, but...

We have 2 members on the list so far. Let's shoot for 100.

I don't have any moral issues with downloading, but a movie like this one, I think I want to see on a big screen, like Mystci River.

And as for such a delay... House of Sand and Fog with your beloved Jen Connelly (;)) has not been released here either yet...at all.

I did get to see The Aviator when I was in the states for Christmas and Ray is coming here soon. I don't know when the others are coming to Japan. Lost In Translation was just released here on DVD this past December, so that gives you an idea how far behind Japan is on some movies.

My beloved Jennifer has a new movie coming out. It's a thriller that looks pretty good. I think it's called Dark water, or something like that.

House of Sand and Fog is already available on Video, isn't it? Is it even worth releasing it at all now, if the DVD is for sale?

Dark Water is a horror remake in the vein of The Ring. I saw the Korean original and while it's not very scary, it is certainly a very well-made film.

House of Sand and Fog is available on VHS and DVD in the States and most parts of Europe, but it's not like the majority of moviegoers orders DVDs from there ;) No idea why the release has been delayed that much. The same seems to be happening to Garden State which has no release date over here yet. Another example is The Contender with Gary Oldman which was releasd about 18 months after the US release over here.

Good, that's 3 members, and 97 left to go.

I should be able to join the club within the next few weeks. We've got less than a month before the Oscars, so there's plenty of time for us to get 100 members who have seen all 5 BP noms. We're movie fans, right?

I've seen all of them.

Saw Sideways, Ray and Finding Neverland during the month of November, The Aviator on New Year's Day, and Million Dollar Baby three weeks ago.

I'm planning to see Vera Drake and Hotel Rwanda this week.

I'll need to buy a puppy by the time this week is through.

I've seen everything nominated in the top categories (picture, director, actors, screeplays) except for:

Vera Drake
Being Julia
The Motorcycle Diaries
Closer
Kinsey

Only Closer is really playing anywhere that I have access to.

I would rank them as:

Million Dollar Baby. A+
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A+
Collateral. A
Sideways. A-
The Incredibles. B+
Ray. B+
Maria Full of Grace. B+
Before Sunset. B+
Hotel Rwanda. B
The Aviator. B
Finding Neverland. C

I suggest to you rewatch Irreversible, 21 Grams, Amores Perros, Dogville and Requiem for a Dream at home for emotional healing ;)

LOL. 21 Grams was awful.

After watching Sideways and Million Dollar Baby back to back, The Aviator was fluff.

I miss fantasy films. \:D/

I don't miss fantasy films per se, but I miss having a picture that's a little less conventional than what we've given.

Finding Neverland or Ray (for example) being replaced by The Incredibles would have been mighty cool and it would have made the Best Pictures more colorful!

The five are all very paint by numbers nominations.

The Incredibles would have been a great 5th BP instead of Ray.

I was thinking more in place of Neverland

National Board of Review and me, that's all the love that FN gets.

Give me an animated film, a fantasy, musical, horror, or even doc, I just like a little flavor thrown in the BP race.

No, I didnt. The acting was good but I wasn't drawn in.

There were a lot of 21 Grams type of movies in '03 for me

Really? I thought the movie was pretty unique (apart from the fact that it was pretty much the remake of its director's Amores Perros). The performances were the best of 2003, the only thing that bothered me was how the story was not presented in a chronological order which was an unnecessary gimmick, in my opinion.

The gimmick of the story, Niaomi Watt's whining and overacting, and Sean Penn's jerky performance kept me from liking this. I mean, it's a REALLY BAD Watts performance :(

If it would have been told straight forward it would have been a conventional movie.

Only the supporting actresses did anything for me.

Weird, I disagree on this one. I thought that Sean Penn deserved an Oscar last year, but much rather for 21 Grams than for Mystic River (even though I liked Mystic River a bit more). I thought Penn was good, but overacting in Mystic River while his rather quiet performance in 21 Grams was superb. Naomi Watts was great as well in my opinion and at least more deserving than Diane Keaton (I haven't seen Monster yet, so no comment on Charlize).

But it was Benicio del Toro who made the best impression on me. Not only was it the best supporting performance of 2003, I thought it was actually the bst performance by any actor in 2003 and del Toro's best performance ever, much superior to his turn in Traffic.

Del Toro's Traffic performance had a certain dignity about it.
