Boo...this is going to be an uneventful Oscar. I'm going to put together alist of Snubs and its going to be pretty damn big.
There are actually some fun picks in there. The problem with Mike Leigh type noms is that the academy considers it "good enough" for them to have even gotten niminated, and they're really not in it for the win. Which is too bad, because it makes the actual winners more predictable, etc. Anyone find the best pic category to just be really generic the whole way down. if they liked Drake so much why didn't it get a now? Hey Secrets and Lies did way back, so Leigh isn't exactly an unknown in the Best Pic category. No big surprises, except for its nice to see Foxx pull a double (only that means he won't win either) and Winslet up there for Eternal Sunshine. Seriously though, I'm not in love with the selection in any of these categories the whole way through. Big list to come. And Xia, I actually am quite surprised Flying Daggers came up empty...even in cintematography, editing, etc.
You'll be comforted to know that Ziyi will get a best actress nod for Geisha when it comes out, I'm calling it now.

Next year's Oscars will look like the employment line at a Panda Express.
Oh my god, I can't believe I just typed that. I'm so racist.
For the record, I'm incredibly attracted to most of the female cast of Memoirs of a Geisha.

Anyone whose read a whopping ten of my posts knows I'm obsessed with Gong Li.
Seriously,
When Geisha comes out she'd better get a supporting actress nom or I'm through with these things.

dolce, Daggers is nominated for Cinematography. The problem is with costume design and art direction, which I thought are very likely and deserving. Yimou's films had gotten cinematography nods before, and I wanted to see more branches take notice.
It does helps to position Memoir of Geisha better though, in a weird way.

I agree.
I think the reason why it was nominated is because Dreamworks executives are whores, that they do anything for a nomination (though not as bad as Miramax, but still pretty bad), even if the movie isn't good. How else do you explain why the English Patient won?

English Patient was Miramax, Scott.
Frankly, Dreamworks won Best Picture 3-years in a row for a reason. Although I don't love Gladiator or A Beautiful Mind, none of the Dreamworks were actually "bad" or "mediocre" films. They just happened to be produced by the same studio.
The English Patient, Chocolat, Cold Mountain, and Gangs of New York all happened to have big pushes from Miramax and the films themselves weren't even that good.
Maybe they just know HOW to market, eh?
