 If Hilary Swank Wins Again...
...she will join these ladies as the only women to have won two (or more) Oscars ever:
Katharine Hepburn
Ingrid Bergman
Bette Davis
Olivia De Havilland
Sally Field
Jane Fonda
Jodie Foster
Glenda Jackson
Vivian Leigh
Elizabeth Taylor
Wow...
So, is it common knowledge now that she is among her generation's best actresses? I mean, do these kinds of nominations (and wins) make someone seem as if they are?

Yeah, she was great in The Core.
Swank would be the 2nd youngest female double winner (Foster beat her by a year, 29 to 30).

Wow, I didn't know there were so few...
Anyway, I really don't think she'll get it.

Nothing like an actor swooping in, beating out the front runners, and disappearing into obscurity.
I love it.

I beg to differ.
I always thought she'd not win, but Box' list made me believe it even more.

No offense to people who love her, but I really hope she doesn't win, because I don't think she deserves to join the group of women who have won two Oscars or more. I don't think she's that great, or at least I don't think she has proven it YET. Just my opinion.
PEACE, Mike

Yeah, but shouldn't the Oscars be about rewarding the best performance in the category, not who "deserves" it the most?
Granted, I haven't seen Vera Drake or (bleh) Being Julia, but I think Swank deserves to win. Her performance was absolutely tremendous.

I really hope (and am starting to think) that Imelda is gonna win this. Benning might, but her Globe speech outta do her in. And Swank, while a great actress, is not gonna get a 2nd. I just don't see the academy honoring her a 2nd time, especially since it has only been 5 years since her first one. She'll probably win the SAG, but she lost it in 1999 to Benning.

Isn't it strange of all the nominees that she is the only previous acting winner? I never thought that would happen with Swank, much less that she would be the frontrunner to win again so quickly.
So what if she wins again? Everyone always talks about who 'deserves' to win. It's too bad that performance alone isn't the only criteria for a win.
I'd love to see a major upset from Kate Winslett if we're talking about someone who is past due.

Like I said, as an actress, I don't think she's that great, so I wouldn't think her performance is the best. I could be wrong, but I'm just not a fan. I should see the film first, but I don't think she will impress me at all anyways, as she never has in any of her performances. So I don't think she is deserving of the award or being part of the prestigious group of women who have won two Oscars. I'd rather see Imelda win. Just my opinion. Maybe you are right.
PEACE, Mike

I haven't seen M$B, but Swank absolutely deserved her Oscar for Boys Don't Cry. I didn't really like the movie, but Swank was great. As much as I like Annette Bening, she didn't deserved to win for American Beauty.

As good as Swank was in Million Dollar Baby, she was 10x better in Boys Don't Cry. So it'll be hard to convince voters to vote for her again for a lesser performance.
I don't think Annette Bening has a chance given that she is a solo nominee, and those need super buzz like Charlize Theron to win.
So Imelda gets it, particularly since the Academy has shown such strong support for the movie.

For as long as they're convinced that her performance is better than that of the others, it won't matter. Boys Don't Cry was up against different performances; this one is up against some others, and overall probably a weaker field (I don't think 2004 was a good year for women).
Anyways, I don't really care who wins; I'd prefer Kate Winslet, but only because I want her to get the Oscar she was robbed of for Titanic.

Two-time Osccar winner. This sounds so surreal. Pretty amazing stuff. And she's got at least one more decade left. Though, knowing how hard good roles are to come by (I don't expect her to be in many good films anytime soon, it's pretty hard to do) I doubt she'll get a third. But hey, maybe a few nominations here and there...

But you guys seem to think all the actresses listed were already the legends they are today by the time they won their second Oscar.

Sally Field and Jodie Foster are the two most recent, and neither fits the description of a 'legend' as of yet. I think Glenda Jackson has more or less veered off the public radar, more or less. The others are legends not just because of the Oscars (or even partly because of them), but for other reasons. I mean:
Katharine Hepburn
4 Oscars, but an exceptional actress who deserved them. She was, also, in a lot ofcrappy films. We don't hear about them because they haven't stood the test of time. Hepburn is also almost a caricature of sorts, whose public image resonates with a lot of women who strive for independence and freedom.
Ingrid Bergman
Casablanca, really. And her affair with Rosselini. She is also more or less the perfection of female beauty. At least, I think so
Bette Davis
Like Hepburn, firece independence and individuality. And like Hepburn, almost a caricature. I mean that in a good way.
Olivia De Havilland
Gone with the Wind, really. She's not that well-known either, but definitely legendary.
Jane Fonda
Well, good actress, yes, but she's as well known for her Vietnam activities in the 1970s and her aerobic exercise videos during the 1980s as for her acting.
Vivian Leigh
Gone with the Wind, one of the most memorable and famous performances ever. It's difficult to ignore her. It's one of the greatest casting decisions (and one of the toughest; it took years to find the right girl to play the part. It was worth the wait). Also, her performance in Streetcar (the 2nd Oscar), and her marriage to Laurence Olivier.
Elizabeth Taylor
Husbands, scandals, diamonds, and her mesmerizing beauty. Oh, and her fantastic performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
..........
I don't think Sally Field is 'legend' material. Beyond the Oscars, she hasn't been a public figure of relevance.
Jodie Foster, however, I think has the right stuff. Hinckley Jr. had claimed that he shot Reagen to get her attention, inspired by The Taxi Driver. Her role in the Silence of the Lambs, though subtle, is one of the crowning acting achievements of the 1990s, opposite another one, Hopkins' Lecter. She needs more films though; she's been out of the public light for so long. But, there's still time.
As for Hilary Swank, she is obviously not as beautiful as Bergman or Leigh (who is?), and she is not as great or consistent an actress as Hepburn (nobody is...), and she does not have the kind of scandal-ridden life that Taylor had (a blessing for Swank). But in the right roles, she is unbelievably fierce. She was so effective as a boy in Boys Don't Cry that many on the set assumed that, when Swank was dressed up as a boy, it really was a boy, Sawnk's brother, who was visiting her. I mean, that is an impressive feat.
........
Current actresses that have the making of a legend:
Nicole Kidman. She can stop right now, and I think she would be one.
Angelina Jolie. She needs good roles. She absolutely, totally needs to make right casting decisions. Jolie as, like Kidman, as beautiful as Taylor and Bergman, so beauty-wise, those actresses have it down. Unlike Kidman, she has made one bad choice after another.
Cate Blanchett. I think it's a shoe-in. She's just so good!
Scarlett Johansson. Just wait and see.
Julianne Moore. Just keep giving us good performances, snag that Oscar you deserve, and there you go!
Em, that's it I'm sure there are others, but I forgot.
One thing that's needed, however, are great, memorable performances.
For example, I think Nicole Kidman will be remembered more for Moulin Rouge than for The Hours. Actually, I think Nicole Kidman will be remembered more for her performance in public after her divorce than for any of her actual film performances. She pulled it off splendidly.
What do you think Rod? Everyone else?

I do think Nicole will be more remembered for Moulin Rouge than The Hours 20 years from now, just like the film itself will. I do wonder how films like Dogville or Birth, where she is about equally good, will be remembered, if at all.
You forgot one "legend"-in-the-making
KATE WINSLET!!!!!!!
I'd actually compare her to Vivian Leigh in a way. But I don't know why
and actually i was thinking about how Hilary Swank reminds me a lot of Sally Field. Field has had two nominations, two wins, no other nominations, I don't know if the same will hold true for Swank, but in the way they are regarded I think it will be the same. Great actresses, one of the best of their generations, but maybe not quite up there with the other winners. You know?
I agree about Jolie.

OMG OMG OMG
Kate Winslet, yes! You're right.
And yes, she is like Vivien Leigh. Kate was amazing in Titanic, I don't care what anyone says. She absolutely carried the film (as did Leo).
Yes, I can see Kate Winslet as a legend. She's very young, and has just started to get out of Titanic's shadow.
One of the best things she did was to take small roles to keep her going during the whole Titanic-mania. Now that the film is somewhat out of the way (it will never completely cease to affect Winslet or DiCaprio; the film was just too big), she can present herself in bigger roles. ESOTSM and Finding Neverland were very clever choices. Consistently good performances, and the occasional brilliant ones will guarantee her a place in film history.
As for Swank, I agree with you. I mean, no one can deny that she can act; she can do it as well as anybody else. The thing is, Kidman, Moore, and Blanchett can act too, and have all shown great range. Kidman also has another huge advantage: she is very glamorous. Aside from being an actress, she is a genuine celebrity, a fashion icon, and so on. It's rare to have a public persona like that. Swank certainly doesn't, and I don't think either Moore or Blanchett do either. Angelina does, but she doesn't have the resume to match her public persona the way Kidman has.

No I don't think so at all. I don't think general movie goers care diddly about Hilary Swank and she'll be all but forgotten in 10 years.
Keira Knightely, Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet are this generation's "legends".

When you say this, do you mean the years ahead or they have already got it? The Legend status.
