Post Directors Guild Awards (Scorsese Wins!)
LOS ANGELES, CA: Carl Reiner will return as host for the 59h Annual Directors Guild of America Awards, DGA President Michael Apted announced today. This year will mark the twentieth time Reiner has hosted the DGA Awards, which will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

The arrivals will begin at 5:30 in LA (8:30 PM EST), so the winners will probably be out a few hours later or so.

Stephen Frears is the only nominee whom will NOT be in attendance for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film. The other four directors will be there.

Presenters list is here:
http://www.dga.org/news/pr_expand.php3?490

Nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film:

Bill Condon, DREAMGIRLS
Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Stephen Frears, THE QUEEN
Alejandro González Iñárritu, BABEL
Martin Scorsese, THE DEPARTED

Peace,
Mike.

Is this the most obvious winner ever or is it just me?

It's so obvious one must worry about a possible upset, in case the directors really, really, really hate Scorsese's guts for some reason.

I'm still oddly weary.

Oddly Departed's entire fate rests on this night. With the way the Globes, PGA, SAGs have been going, I would-

Ok ok, there's no way Scorsese loses. Though I still want the confirmation.

Yeah, ditto. I feel like Scorsese has to have it locked up, but still need a confirmation and won't be settled until he's really the winner. There's been talk that Inarritu might win.

Peace,
Mike.

Hard to see how Scorsese could lose here considering the other four are all first-time nominees, but yeah, this has been such a weird season. Imagine if Bill Condon wins.

Ang Lee was a lock last year. So Martin being a lock is not really that unusual.

If someone wins this from Scorsese, the film automatically becomes the frontrunner (unless it's Condon of course) since this upset will be the biggest of the season by far, surpassing LMS winning PGA by a large margin, and if that someone happens to be Dayton and Faris, LMS will become unbeatable.

Even though I'm on the LMS team, Dayton and Faris winning would be the most bizarre and undeserving thing to happen this Oscar season. LMS is great, but the direction is not noticable at all, heh. I don't see how it could win for a mostly point and shoot Kevin Smith-esque style of directing.

If the dude from Babel wins, I'll puke right through the screen.

If Inarritu wins, The Departed's chances of winning Best Picture will be shot... point blanc... in the head. ;)

Scorsese is a lock. It's a done deal. There are only two directors, who deserve more this award, well none of them got a nomination. I'm talking about Eastwood and Cuaron.

It'd actually be kind of... COOL if Condon won.

Will this be anounced any time soon?

This is shaping up to be a nailbiter! I dont think Scorcese has it in the bag at all.

In about 50 minutes, although someone already jumped the gun to edit the wiki page ("last modified 16:33, 29 January 2007").

EDIT: now it just changed. :)

Some people apparently have too much time. The Wiki DGA page has seen Hitler, Clint "Beastwood", and Uwe Boll to win this award.

I thought Scorsese had won the DGA before, but according to IMDB, he hasn't. I don't know where I heard that from. So, Scorsese has not only been shutout by the Oscars for his directing, but the DGA as well? Wow. He HAS to win this then. My only scepticism came from the fact that I had thought he had won recently - I don't know why I thought that.

Peace,
Mike.

Scorsese received DGAs lifetime achievement award in 2003. He has never won a competitive DGA, hopefully that will change tonight.

Some of the winners have come in now, from OW:

First DGA winner: The pilot episode of "Ugly Betty" won top honours Saturday for comedy television series at the Directors Guild of America Awards.

Arunas Matelis won for feature-film documentary for "Before Flying Back to the Earth," a portrait of children hospitalized with leukemia. The film won over two Academy Awards nominees, "Deliver Us From Evil" and "Iraq in Fragments."

Peace,
Mike.
