It could, right?

93% RT. 84 Metacritic. No guaranteed fifth spot.

No. It really couldn't.

It's probably better for it not to be at this point.

As much of a game this whole Oscar business is, it's really not good enough for films like Children of Men, Fountain, (and U93 to me).

If Children of Men got a Best Picture nomination, I would be so incredibly happy. It would be so great, it would probably overcome any inevitable negatives that will happen (films being nominated/winning that I don't want).

I'm still holding out for a surprise DGA nomination for Alsonso Cuaron, which despite no major showings elsewhere, would keep the film in. Otherwise, I can't see it getting an Oscar Best Picture nomination.

Peace,
Mike.

Director... Maybe. Picture however is out of the question from what I can tell.

I still stand by what I've been saying for the past six months: Moving it from late September to now was a huge, huge mistake. With the reviews and WOM and mainstream appeal this has, it could have had a BP nomination locked up at this point.

No. It just should have gone wide in December against... something.

It's actually the first time in 3 years or so that you can make a good solid and complete alternate five for (what I believe to be) is a pretty decent crop of final five films.

As I mentioned in another thread, with so much going on in December now, it makes no sense to have a very limited release on the last week of the year. Move the whole platform up two weeks, then it'd have been perfect.

Phew, I was a little worried for a second after reading your comment in the CoM review thread.

I think Children of Men should have been released on the date Blood Diamond came out.

It would be nice, but it's not happening unless their campaign kicks wildly into high gear.

First they need to get a campaign, then they can kick it into high gear.

Either strategy would have worked, but I think with a strong marketing campaign and the great reviews it could've opened strong enough to finish with over 70 million, and that would be more then enough for it to not be forgotten in the coming months. Then again, maybe it being released elsewhere actually helped the film not get lost in the shuffle by building more buzz...

I actually think that opening at this time of the year with all the awards talk and carryover buzz from international territories, along with audiences being in the moviegoing mood, made this release date the best possible box office it could have gotten. In other words, Universal did it right, monetarily speaking.

This thread title reminds me of a great Beach Boys song.

I saw Children of Men tonight.

It was certainly very interesting, thought-provoking and dramatic, but I was somewhat let down after all the amazing things I'd heard. It was easier to admire and respect than love, in my opinion. I gave it a B+ and would say it's on equal footing with Babel for me.

I don't even think ROTK was my top film of the year. I really need to think about this one. Hmm.

Midnight Cowboy I guess.

The Crying Game (which managed to be 02. on the top 100, so I'm assuming it was the year's best).
