Thanks, they seem to help form a bigger picture in the Best Picture/Director/Best Actor/Actress/Supporting Actor/Supporting Actress/Orginal Screenplay/Adapted Screenplay for me. I hope they help everyone else, too.

I have another chart that I'm working on that I'll hopefully have done this weekend. I'm waiting for an awards schedule to pop up, too, so I can chart that.

Can we do something about the Announcement and Sticky threads that are currently up and Sticky this thread so we can get ready for the upcoming season?

Those numbers for United 93 are just AMAZING! It would be a travesty for it not to get a nomination. 19 "100's" from metacritic? That's just too impressive to brush aside. 90% and an over 8 rating at RT? It's got Universal support, no question about it.

It'll get a best picture Nom I'd wager and perhaps 1 or 2 more in the minor catagories but no wins.

It comes out Tuesday on DVD. They have their work cut out for them if they want a nom because of it's early release date + lousy box office. I think they'd have to have so much go right for them. A succession of failures in the upcoming season and a powerful DVD campaign would definitely get it in. It doesn't have the "acting" muscle that Crash did, and they make up the most members of the academy. The studio definitely needs to do something to appeal to their patriotic sense.

I'd love nothing more for it to get in. It was the best film of the year, so far, and those marks are elite class. It's all up to how the rest of the year plays out. If 5 high profile contenders on the list deliver, it's more or less over for United 93. (example: Flags of Our Fathers, Dreamgirls, The Good German, The Good Shepherd, and The Departed) I don't think it could overcome the obstacle, even with it's stellar reception.

As I mentioned before...

There has never been a movie in history with the acclaim that U93 got AND a $30+ million gross that didn't get a single nom.

Here are films with similar acclaim:

The Incredibles
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit
March of the Penguins
Hero
Spider-Man 2
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Finding Nemo
Catch Me If You Can
Minority Report
Monsters, Inc.
Memento
Chicken Run

All of them ended up being nominated for something.

Now films with similar RT scores that didn't get noms:

About a Boy
School of Rock
Spy Kids
High Fidelity

That's it. They all also grossed $30+ million. But....

Metascores:

School of Rock - 82/100 (seven 100's)
High Fidelity - 79/100 (five 100's)
About a Boy - 75/100 (two 100's)
Spy Kids - 71/100 (zero 100's)
United 93 - 90/100 (18 100's)

RT Averages:

School of Rock - 7.7/10
High Fidelity - 7.5/10
Spy Kids - 7.2/10
About a Boy - 7.8/10
United 93 - 8.2/10

Those are not comparable. This makes U93 only comparable with the films on my first list that got at least one nom for something.

What noms can U93 theoretically get? Cinematography, Editing, Director, Picture. Maybe Screenplay, but that's going out on a limb. I say it is at least guaranteed to get one of them with the stats I mentioned.

I wouldn't be surprised if the oscar voters look at the low grosses of the oscar noms from 2005 and decide to go for some safer bets like The Departed and Flags of our Fathers (barring awful reviews). United 93 if it is serious about an oscar campaign will play the patriot card and it probably will get a nom. I've already written about my apathy towards it but I can say from a detacted position that it deserves an oscar nom.

I keep hearing people talking about Dreamgirls which I'll fully admit to knowing nothing about. I'll have to read up on it.

Best Actress nomination

I think it'll definitely get Editing and Screenplay as a consolation prize. (at least a nomination)

No, not screenplay. This film did not even have a proper screenplay, hehe. The only chance it can get a screenplay nom is if it gets a BP nom, but even then it's not a given. In fact I predict Cinematography/Editing/Director/Picture, but no screenplay.

There are those who believe that a high profile Musical is a lock, but they fail more than they ever succeed because of how hard they are to pull off. Dreamgirls is something I look forward to, but I'm not in the camp that believes it's going to be standing when the final 5 are announced. Just a hunch. The same hunch that told me that Jarhead and Memoirs of a Geisha would fail to get any major nominations. I didn't want to have to have any pictures that some were considering to be a lock very passionately that I'd have to debate on, but that's part of the fun, I guess.

I always feels a bit uncomfortable backing a movie before I see it. The chance of pie in the face is just to much

Sure it had a proper screenplay.

Screenplays are often given to low grossing/well received films. Good example, The Squid and the Whale. It's the "Thanks for a great film, but you're not getting a Best Picture nomination, so here's something for the effort" reward.

In that case it'd go to Director, but not screenplay man, because it in fact did not have a proper one. A whole lot was improvised.

No, not screenplay. This film did not even have a proper screenplay, hehe. The only chance it can get a screenplay nom is if it gets a BP nom, but even then it's not a given. In fact I predict Cinematography/Editing/Director/Picture, but no screenplay.

Sure it had a proper screenplay.

Screenplays are often given to low grossing/well received films. Good example, The Squid and the Whale. It's the "Thanks for a great film, but you're not getting a Best Picture nomination, so here's something for the effort" reward.

I read that a lot of the scenes were ad-libbed to add to the films effect. They would work against a screenplay nom as well.

You're barking up the wrong tree if you think improv isn't common. It's not going to elbow out Eastwood, De Niro, Scorces, Estevez, Soderbergh, etc... when it can elbow out some screenwriter that nobody cares about. It's "only" got critical support, and that's not going to be enough for what you're suggesting when it doesn't have actors and tech guys and basically nobody with connections involved. It's politics. Failures and a heavy campaign that strikes a patriotic nerve is the only chance of anything beyond a screenplay consolation.

The great thing about stats is that they can be undone in an instant (note Crash's win over Brokeback). It's great that a film hasn't been as critically received as UA93 and failed to score a major nom. But it only takes an instant for that factoid to change. Hopefully, UA93 will become a trivia question.

great thread BTW Mav.

Thank you. Plenty of critical darlings have come up short due to other reasons. Crash defeating Brokeback is a perfect example of how it really doesn't mean all that much.

I'm rooting for United 93, though. I hope I'm dead wrong.

Improv is fine if you have an extraordinarily good script to back it up. U93 doesn't (despite the film being pretty good).

United 93 if it is serious about an oscar campaign will play the patriot card and it probably will get a nom.

No, that would be the wrong way to play United 93. People expressly have called out that one of the things they like about the film is that it doesn't itself play that card (some of the marketing did though).
