Post ASC (Cinematographers) Nominations
The Aviator
Collateral
The Passion of the Christ
Ray
A Very Long Engagement

We could be looking at the 5 oscar nominees right here, with House of Flying Daggers being the alternative.

Ray continues to show strong support in tech branches, while Million Dollar Baby continues to show the lack there of from the same branches. I actually consider Ray is more of a lock than Finding Neverland because its support seems to be firmer than FN. I'm willing to go out on a limb to say Hotel Rwanda will take more votes away from and replace Finding Neverland instead of Ray. I know it's against all historical data given the precursor awards FN has received, but somehow I just feel that. In a year where there is such a separation between the top 6 BP contenders and the rest, the placement of those films in each ballot is important, and I feel the love for Ray and Hotel Rwanda runs deeper than Finding Neverland. There could be many No. 1 or No. 2 votes for the first two, while a lot of No. 5 for FN, even though it will appear in more ballots.

Mel's 'Passion' Gets a Rare Nomination
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" is finally getting some respect in Hollywood.
The American Society of Cinematographers on Tuesday became the industry's first professional organization to include the gritty box office champ among its list of honorees. The film has been snubbed by Hollywood's actors, directors and producers, but it did win a People's Choice Award on Sunday.

"Passion" cameraman Caleb Deschanel was among the feature film nominees for the ASC's 19th annual awards, which will take place Feb. 13 at the Grand Ballroom in the Hollywood & Highland complex. (The event was previously scheduled for Feb. 20 at the Century Plaza Hotel.)

Other nominees include first-time contenders Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron, for "Collateral"; Bruno Delbonnel, for "A Very Long Engagement"; Pawel Edelman, for "Ray"; and Robert Richardson, for "The Aviator."

Deschanel is the only previous ASC winner. He won for 2000's "The Patriot" and was nominated for 1996's "Fly Away Home." He received Academy Award nominations for those two films, as well as for "The Natural" and "The Right Stuff," but has never won the Oscar.

Richardson was previously nominated by the ASC for "Born on the Fourth of July," "JFK," "A Few Good Men," "Heaven & Earth," "The Horse Whisperer" and "Snow Falling on Cedars." He won the Academy Award for "JFK," and was Oscar-nominated for "Born," "Snow" and "Platoon."

Delbonnel was previously nominated by both the ASC and the Academy for "Amelie," and Edelman by both groups for "The Pianist."

Last year's ASC winner was John Schwartzman for "Seabiscuit," although the cinematography Oscar went to ASC nominee Russell Boyd for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."

I think Deschanel has a great shot to win this and the oscar seeing that this is a veteran and he has been snubbed a few times by the academy awards.

One of my favourite categories. The Aviator, The Passion and Collateral all deserve the recognition. As for the other 2, I can't really comment on since I haven't seen them. It would be nice to see House of Flying Daggers on the list come nomination day, but either way, I think The Aviator winning is a forgone conclusion.

How could they forget Daggers? Otherwise a good list and probably pretty close to the Oscar nominations

All look, solid. As I said a while ago, The Passion will end up with some nods.

I would have really loved to see The Bourne Supremacy or Harry Potter pull a nom here but didn't expect it.

Ray continues to shine.

The Bourne Supremacy was an incoherent mess with its fucking shaky-cam technique and definitely doesn't deserve to receive any accolades for that aspect of the film, nor for any other.

Well, the Passion rightfully deserved this nod. One of its strongest qualities was indeed cinemtagraphy which I pointed out in my initial review of the film.

As for the Neverland/Ray/Rwanda subject...

I too think that Neverland has a chance to missing out in place of Rwanda, but I wouldn't go so far as to make it my prediction, YET!

I think Neverland might be like Cold Mountain last year. there is obviously some backlash because many don't think it was indeed that good, but nowhere near the backlash Cold Mountain had. We'll just have to see.

Rwanda and Neverland may split the votes and it could go to Sunshine

Cold Mountain actually was a really good movie. Much better than Master & Commander and probably better than Seabiscuit.

film stock and good cinematography is something i always look for in a movie. Ive only seen The Passion out of that list, and its cinematography was pretty good but ive seen better in 2004.

The fact that the Academy will have overlooked Robert Richardson's amazing Kill Bill cinematography, 2 years in a row, is quite puzzling :-k . Volume 2 had that amazing black and white opening scene at the chapel, the buried alive sequence and the insane zooms and film grade manipulation in the Pai Mei chapter. The Village also deserves recognition, but won't get it.

The Bourne Supremacy may be shaky but it's active and keeps the pace going. There is a weird kinetic energy in every frame of the film. It is one of the best shot films of the year. Unlike the The Aviator and The Passion of the Christ which are nice, but by the book.

Hopefully The Motorcycle Diaries makes the Oscar list in place of Ray or The Passion of the Christ.
