Post Thoughts On The Oscar Nominees
I have no idea why this forum is so dead with so much to talk about weeks before the big night. What up with that?

I'll give you my opinion on the nominees, but before I do, I did want to clarify that my break had nothing to do with Walk the Line getting snubbed. I actually took it before nominations came out, and it was for other reasons. The fun factor being one of them, and another is that my schedule is pretty busy. We've only got a few weeks left, so isn't it time to get some conversations going? There is so much discussion that can be had between now and March 5th. What are we waiting for?

Best Picture:
Brokeback Mountain
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Capote
Munich

I am totally shocked that Walk the Line was snubbed. Me and 99% of everybody had it pretty safe and it was the first thing the hosts of E! mentioned that shocked them after nominations were announced. I also saw comments on CNN about it's snub. I have no idea why. It had guild support and it's box office shows that it's well received. This year was definitely a case of easily being able to predict the top 6 films.

Best Director:
Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
Paul Haggis, Crash
George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck
Bennett Miller, Capote
Steven Spielberg, Munich

Boy, they really decided to smooch Spielberg's ass a bit, didn't they? I thought Cronenberg was going to slip in, but they went with Miller. BORING! The rest was pretty much expected.

Best Actor:
Philip Seymour Hoffman,
Capote
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck
Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow

That's the lineup I had been seeing for a while, and the Terrence Howard vote was that infamous quota thing, as expected. Not that he wasn't deserving.

Best Actress:
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Keira Knightley, Pride and Prejudice
Charlize Theron, North Country
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents

I believe those were my picks. I didn't bite on dropping Knightly from my picks in favor of that Asian girl, and Charlize kinda always seemed like she'd make it.

Best Supporting Actor
George Clooney, Syriana
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Matt Dillon, Crash
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
William Hurt, A History of Violence

YAY! I got this right, too, as they did indeed go with Hurt. This award is Clooney's. Accept it, Giamatti supporters!

Best Supporting Actress:
Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Amy Adams, Junebug
Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
Catherine Keener, Capote
Frances McDormand, North Country

The major players were selected, with positions for and five being up for grabs. McDormand doesn't deserve her nom. At least Keener had a busy enough yer to get something, but her performance in Capote was blah...nothing of note.

Screenplay - Original:
Paul Haggis, Robert Moresco, Crash
Grant Heslov, George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck
Stephen Gaghan, Syriana
Noah Baumbach, The Squid and the Whale
Woody Allen, Match Point

I would have to look, but I believe those are the ones I went with. If not, they were in the mix, but I'm pretty sure I picked those. This will be what Haggis gets rewarded for.

Screenplay - Adapted
Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana, Brokeback Mountain
Dan Futterman, Capote
Jeffrey Caine, The Constant Gardener
Josh Olson, A History of Violence
Tony Kushner & Eric Roth, Munich

I guess that's cool.

Animated Feature
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
The Corpse Bride
Howl's Moving Castle

It is going to Wallace and Gromit, so who cares who the other two are

Animated Short
Badgered
The Moon and the Son
Mysterious Geographic Explorations
One Man Band

Not only do I know next to nothing about this stuff, it doesn't bother me that I don't.

Foreign Language Film
Paradise Now
Tsotsi (South Africa)
Joyeux Noel
The Promise
Don't Tell
Sophie Scholl

I'm not a big fan of Foreign Films, so I couldn't tell you what's good and what's not and would probably watch the Mask 2 first...hehe

Documentary Feature
March of the Penguins
Murderball
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
Darwin's Nightmare
Street Fight

WTF??? Where's Grizzly Man? Wasn't it the best reviewed Doc? I caught it last week on TV and thought it to be much better than Penguins. This is a travesty that it was snubbed.

Documentary Short
Death of Kevin Carter
God Sleeps in Rwanda
Mushroom Club
A Note of Triump

yeah, I really care...

GO MUSHROOM CLUB!!! :cheer:

Art Direction
Memoirs of a Geisha
King Kong
Pride & Prejudice
Harry Potter
Good Night, and Good Luck

And the Lucas hate continues. No New World? No Sin City? That deserved it over Kong or Potter.

Visual F/X
Chronicles of Narnia
King Kong
War of the Worlds

WHERE THE $%#@& IS REVENGE OF THE SITH??? This snub is even worse than Walk the Line's BP snub. There is absolutely no excuse for this. It's a complete slap in the face to the integrity of the Oscars!

Costumes
Memoirs of a Geisha
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Pride & Prejudice
Walk the Line

This is just one man's opinion, but Fantastic Four has better costumes than Walk the Line, because Walk the Line didn't HAVE frickin' costumes...Ugghhh!

Makeup
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe
Cinderella Man
Star Wars: Sith

Well, at least they decided to reward Natalie Portman for putting on her mascara and eye shadow properly. Woopidy freakin' do...

Editing
Crash
Munich
The Constant Gardener
Good Night, and Good Luck
Cinderella Man
Walk the Line

All good choices.

Cinematography
Brokeback Mountain
Good Night, and Good Luck
Memoirs of a Geisha
Batman Begins
The New World

Nice to see Batman Begins slip in there. That was a surprise.

Sound Mixing
Memoirs of a Geisha
Walk the Line
War of the Worlds
Chronicles of Narnia
King Kong

None of these are terribly surprising.

Sound Editing
King Kong
Memoirs of a Geisha
War of the Worlds

Did Lucas rape their childhood or something? Geez... :nope:

Original Score
John Williams, Memoirs of a Geisha
Gustavo Santaollala, Brokeback Mountain
John Williams, Munich
Dario Marianell, Pride & Prejudice
Alberto Iglesias, The Constant Gardener

Two noms for John Williams (the best of the best, I might add) = one win for best score for memoirs of a Geisha, methinks. I can't believe the weak and punchless score for The Constant Gardener got nominated. It's one of those cases where a stronger scaore would have made the movie so much better.

Song
Into the Deep , Crash
It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp, Hustle and Flow
Travelin' Thru, Dolly Parton, Transamerica

Didn't Brokeback Mountain have an Emmy Lou harris song that was expected to get a nom? Looks like Dolly beat her out. I figured that Terrence Howard would get the gold as his reward for a fine year old around, but Dolly could upset that applecart.

Ok, y'all, that's my take on the noms. Some shocks, some head scratchers, but most of the noms seemed to be easy enough to guess.

What are your thoughts? Why hasn't there been a thread on these noms, or has there and I just missed it. Whatever, get to chatting it up! The Oscars are coming soon!!!

Well first I have to say that I didnt had to chance to see all nominees cause some are not out yet.
Well Im Happy for Batman. Thought it had some nice visual effort. I also do not understand why SW didnt get an nomination. I would give the Oscar to War of the Worlds but SW at least deserved an nomination. The 2 most sucesfful movies of the last year (HP and SW) now have a very weak Oscar lineup.

Brokeback Mountain's song was not eligible.

Good comments too, by the way.

I still think that Star Wars' snub was one of the most shocking snubs in recent memory. I mean 95% of people predicted Walk the Line for Best Picture, but 100% predicted Star Wars for the Visual Effects nom. Heck, I even predicted it to win since it's the last in the series and all. Not only they snub it, but they also snub Harry Potter. The visual effects of both are much much much superior to Narnia. There are sure some New Zealand lovers among the voters there. Of all the possible noms, Star Wars gets Make-Up. That is just weird.

I disagree about Art Direction. Harry Potter deserved its nom big big time and so did King Kong. The film that was snubbed was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Grizzly Man wasn't eligible for a nomination as Best Documentary.

McDormand really didn't deserve her nom, especially not over Bello. It has something to do with her character in the movie (those who have seen it, know what I mean) why exactly she got a nom. Charlize Theron deserved her nomination, though. All the way.

William Hurt was great, but essentially, he was nominated for a cameo role. I would have prefered to see Ed Harris nominated.

How do you feel about Clooney winning (?) for Syriana, when his big work this year (and all other noms directly or indirectly attributed to him) is Good Night and Good Luck?

Head's up everyone, Paradise Now is not winning Foreign Language Film. I don't care what anyone else says. Don't trust the papers...trust me.

Maybe the nominated Speilebrg because he was film as really good.

You comments like this really get to me, why becuase the yera Halle Berry own and made her speech she gets attacked for saying its for everyone, but when a black actor gets nominated, we here, "its the quota thing." So its wrong for Berry to cuggest her vicotry has deeper meaning for the black actors, but when black actors get nominated its a quota thing?

Not hat he was deserving line doesn't make the previous comment kosher.

You basically said "hey nominated him because he was black, but he deserved." What the fuck does that mean? Id he desrves then his race is immaterial, except it isn't, because you had to bring it up.

You can think I am overreatcing all you want, but I am not. I am so sick of tired of this quote BS.

I'm not entirely sure I agree. Star Wars' visual effects weren't really all that better than Chronicles of Narnia. Yoda still looked like a cartoon, and a lot of the effects on the lava planet were a bit hokey. Narnia had a few shaky spots as well, but Aslan was a spectacular CGI creation.

I think that his Syriana work is strong and that the best supporting actor category would probably be his, anyway, but he's going to be a victim of Brokeback Mountain and Crash. Supporting Actor is a good fit, and ties up the Clooney love in a nice package. I don't think that he'll care that he was shutout with GNAGL as long as he gets something for his excellent year in the industry.

I still feel the wealth will be spread this year.

Best Picture - Brokeback Mountain
Best Director - Ang Lee

Those two awards will take care of the biggest winner

Best Actor - Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Takes care of Capote)

Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon (Takes care of Walk the Line)

Best Supporting Actor - George Clooney (Takes care of George Clooney getting shut out for Good Night, and Good Luck. Giamatti has been given his love.)

Best Supporting Actress - Amy Adams (This will be the surprise of the night, though Rachel Weisz has always been high on my list.)

Best Original Screenplay - Crash (This is where Paul Haggis gets his reward for Crash being his followup to his loss last year when Million Dollar Baby lost to Sideways. George Clooney isn't going to have to share a screenwriting award after the year that he had, so Best Supporting Actor is a much better fit all the way around.)

Best Adapted Screenplay - Brokeback Mountain (The screenplay winners this year will be the two frontrunners for Best Picture. It'll create a bit of doubt that Brokeback will be the winner until Ang Lee wins for director.)

I've heard that it's beautifully filmed, so it just may. I would think Brokeback Mountain or Good Night, and Good Luck would have the upper hand, though, but any of those (except Batman Begins) could win it.

Um...I thought Aslan looked like a catroon almost all the time. They did some of the worst SFX jobs on him.

True.

A big "what the hell?" from me now....

Well, then Brokeback Mountain is likely to get it since I don't see it walking away with just three awards.

Hehe, yep. Over here, I don't have a single friend who really cares about them. Well, apart from one, but he's in the army right now.

It's not expanding. Too bad you'll miss the big screen experience it desereves.

Barring that, I say download it before the KJ awards are due *ahem* and if you like it, talk about it A LOT, so that the people in vicinity of like the 200 theatres that have it this weekend might go see it. Plus, I want it to get KJ awards, plus I think you'll like it. If you don't, then maybe pretend you didn't see it at all.....

When are the polls closed for the awards? I turned in my ballot a few days ago, but could change things if I liked The New World.

I will really do my best to see it asap.

Lecter, I've almost given up on Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. However, my specialty theater just got The Matador, so hope springs eternal!
