I was re-reading the Oscar noms recently again and realized whaz a truly unusual year this is. I am not just speaking about the singular unusual things, but the fact that all of them happened in the same year.

These are the odd things I have noticed about this year's Oscars:

- No Best Visual Effects nomination for Star Wars - the very first Star Wars flick not to get one. Yet, it got a make-up nom.

- Only three Best Song nominees for the first time in over a decade

- There is only one single movie with over six nominations for the first time in over 25 (or more?) years

- The movie with the highest number of nominations received only 8 noms

- The Best Picture frontrunner received no Best Editing nomination for the first time in 25 years

- Only two Best Picture nominees received Editing noms

- The Best Director and Best Picture nominations matched 5/5 for the first time in 25 years

- Only two of the Best Picture nominees were nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes

- Only three of the Best Director nominees were nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes

- A movie with less than 35% at RT received six Oscar nominations

- 14 of the acting nominees are first-time nominees

- The Academy went for quality and not huge commercial success in the Best Animated Picture categry, by nominating Howl's Moving Castle

- By the time of the nominees announcement not a single Best Picture nominee made $60+ million

Two of the three highest grossing imports were not nominated in any way shape or form (Downfall, contrary to everyone's opinion, doesn't count, as it was actually nominated last year).

2 of the five BP noms are shot in Black and White (to some extent), as well.

All 5 nominees are nominated for Screenplay. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Actually, unless I missed something, I think you have to go back to 1948 for that.

The Best Actress category has 3 nominees from the Comedy/Musical Actress Globe category.

Is this like a rare occurence?

You know if Geisha ended up being a better movie it could've easily won best picture this year, I mean it would've atleast been a favor. It had the technical awards under it's belt, it just needed to be a stronger movie and it could've happened.

You find this interesting (but sad), that in the first time in BO tracking history, every single Best Picture nominee dropped in the per screen averages from the previous weekend in their first post-nod weekend. How sad it that?

Was this the first time post-nomination weekend coincided with Super Bowl weekend?

I think same goes for All The King's Men if it had stuck around in 2005, I think it would've been a great help to this years weak race.

Is it too early to call this year's BP nominees an embarassment.

There is only one embarrassment on the list. The Oscars have often nominated mediocre/decent films, see Chocolat, but this is the first year where I look to one of the nominees and shake my head.

Munich kicks ass, so at the end of the day 1/5 ain't bad...

Here's another probable one: Not a single BP nominee will pass 100 million dollars box-office, for the first time since 1985.
