Snubbing Lucas and ROTS In Favor Of KONG For BEST FX IS:
B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T!!! My eyes about popped out of their sockets when I read this at AICN:
24. Visual Effects: "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," "King Kong," "War of the Worlds."
Where the fuc* was SITH on this list??? KONG over SITH for better FX??? Really??? You think???? For what?? More accessibility to Green Screen or what??? Fuc* The Academy on this..

I didn't think animated films were qualified in this category.

Oh yeah and that Dinosaur stampede scene in KONG was really something to write home about.. There was a massive amount of Green screen involved with KONG to kid, not just with SITH..

well Kongs FXs werent all that great to me and Sith was a piece of shit, Narnia had great visuals, but WOTW had the best of any movie out there....
it really wouldnt matter if Sith were nominated, WOTW is going to win it anyways

WOTW and Kong both had far better effects than Sith.
Narnia......not so much. I still get a kick of Sith's snub though.

Sith's visuals were pretty bad... WotW was great and King Kong and Narnia were okay, but I think they should have nominated Goblet of Fire instead of King Kong.

The visuals were brilliant in ROTS.
That is besides the point. Lucas doesn't give a shit whether the moronic academy recognizes his work or not. Anyway ROTS was recognized as the best by the most important group, the audiences who pay to see the movies.

Just as Gollum himself earned the FX Oscar... Kong himself deserves this Oscar

the brachiasaurus stampede alone should have nixed any chance Kong had for a nom... it was so cheesy and technologically half-baked, it hurt
so, I'm with BKB on this. Sith definitely got robbed. not that it matters

WOTW is the one that should have been snubbed. I think Sith deserved it more, but GOF more then that. I'd even put KOH, Constantine, and The Island ahead of WOTW.

That all is crap. ROTS deserved a nom, much moreso than Narnia.
Then again, Harry Potter deserved it as well.

This is one of the categories that shocked me the most. I really cant believe Sith missed out. And how did Narnia get in? Narnia's effects are aweful. Its a shame that Potter missed out too. Hopefully War of the Worlds wins, it definately deserves it over its current competition.

It's positively appalling that SITH was snubbed, but you know, at the end of the day, I visulaize a pic of Lucas flipping the finger high in the air at the Academy as he speeds off in his Ferrari and in the process, checks the balance of his checkbook while doing so knowing his movie clearly outgrossed KONG by leaps and bounds.. There is no reason why this movie shouldn't of been at least nominated.. The only thing the makers of KONG have to be thankful for is the amount of Green Screen time they hogged over SITH when it came to their FX which looked every bit as animated as folks who claim SITH was..

It shoulda been Kong, Sith, and Potter.
From the bits and pieces I've seen of Narnia, it isn't as impressive. War of the Worlds was good, but there's a lot better.

Although I loved Narnia - I think the effects were weaker than the others - however Aslan was good.
Kong himself is nothing short of brilliant. He alone deserves the Oscar. Sadly the dino stampede was the total opposite.
I hated the effects on AOTC - some of the worst ever - but ROTS really turned things around and the effects work well.

What about Sin City, I thought the visual effects were extraordinary. I guess they only consider films with the highest budgets for visual effects.
I think It should have been.
Sin City
Star Wars
GOF
King Kong
Chronicles of Narnia.

I was surprised to see Sith snubbed too. I'm not knowledgeable to distinguish between Sith and Kong, but that's for the experts to decide. They should both have been nominated.
I wonder, can a bad special effect cancel out a good special effect? Kong was good, but they dropped the ball on the dinosaurs? I don't know...
p.s. LotR had some really bad compositing moments too...especially in TTT. I personally think the RotK VFX Oscar was for Shelob.

Isn't this category based on nominations from people who actually work in the SFX industry? In other words, people who look to more than whether they liked the film or not, but whether the SFX were well done?
I think the love of Star Wars (or King Kong or whatever) sometimes blinds people to the technical aspects of the film. Forget about acting, plot, direction and so on -- were the SFX well done? That's all this category cares about.
It's like art -- if you get artists together and they go to a museum, they will look at the artwork in a completely different way than the rest of us. (Trust me, my wife is an artist). They look at the technique and whether the artist acheived their goal and so on, while the rest of us say "I like that one, it's pretty." Well, this film category is for the artists of film. They really don't care about the same criteria as the average person does.
ROTS looked like a big computer game to me for a lot of it. King Kong had a few problems (the dinosaur race) but overall, it was better (in my opinion), especially Kong himself who was very believable. WOTW was also pretty well done, and I can't think of any scenes that looked especially bad like I can for the other two.

You can justify these two, but Narnia?

You bring up a good point about 5 nominees. Why not have 5 nominees this year? Why does it have to be 3 every year? Out of all years, they could have easily filled up 5 slots with deserving noms. You've got ROTS, King Kong, Sin City, War of the Worlds, Goblet of Fire. There's 5 good one's right there. Silly Academy.
PEACE, Mike.
