If Brokeback wasn't in the race...
I just had this thought and am quite surprised I haven't seen it come up before...
what if Brokeback was either not as well recieved or released another?
What on earth would have been th front-runner? The line-up?
We all know Crash is second in line to win, but Crash wasn't really in the race until late December.
So, what would the race have been like?

I'd agree. Even if it had gone along the same as it did.
I think going into nominations either Crash or Munich would have been the front-runner. I'm prone to say Crash and then Munich would have gone to upset with Clooney or Haggis winning Director, splitting the Director/Writer award.

There would be much fewer people from the Ye Olde Pube thread posting in this forum

Right on. Maybe Clooney would win Director, though.

Either Pride and Prejudice or The Constant Gardener would've been the replacement nominee (6 nominations) with Focus's awards push behind it. And whichever one of Crash or Munich that wins Best Drama at the GG would end up with the Best Picture Oscar (assuming that one of them would take Brokeback's spot there)
What I really wonder is if both Sideways and Brokeback Mountain were released in the same year, which one would be winning more critics' awards? And would Million Dollar Baby beat Brokeback Mountain for the Oscar in the same year?

The frontrunner would be GNGL for a couple reasons. It has a decent amt of nominations, has BA/BP nods, and most important instead of it being a Gay agenda oscars it would be a Liberal agenda oscars and that's what the hollywood elite would go str8 for.

I don't think so. IT's lack of passionate support has actually surprised me, so I don't think it would take that big a leap without Brokeback.

A movie like GNAGL would never, in any universe, be a major player for the win. It's so small.

Yep and while it is universally liked, there is no passionate support behind it. Munich and Crash have more of that.
