For at least I did know that its chances were not any better than Munich's.

The Academy hates Johnny and June Carter Cash enough to snub them for Best Picture, but they adore Joaquin and Reese enough to give them nominations.
Explained.

Walk The Line missing Best Pic has nothing to do with Johnny Cash or June Carter, and everything to do with the fact that its a good movie most like, but very few love.
I wish I'd kicked it out of my predictions. I was just too timid to jump on the Capote train.

Ditto. I even nailed Best Director 5/5, but went for WTL instead of Capote, even though I knew that Capote had a better shot overall. Munich was ahead of WTL all the way, though!

WTL has ended up being exactly like Ray, sans the BP nomination. Hopefully, Bob and Harvey can get their asses in gear and preach the gospel of Huffman.

Here is a question:
When was the last time that a movie gor a Best Actor and a Best Actress nom without getting a Best Picture nom?

It's a movie about flyovers. Hollywood doesn't really understand the middle of the country unless it is involved in some social issue they relate to.
There you go, my best shot at making an excuse for it, not that I care either way.

And, for that matter, Dead Man Walking. Also in '95.

Yeah, I guess. It actually got a Directing nod, though, womething WTL never even came close to. I am still surprised that Leaving Las Vegas didn't get a Best Pic nod. It received enough acclaim and won quite a couple of awards.

Yeah 95 was a fun acting year.
All 4 winners from non-BP nominated films.

Ironically enough, Dead Man Walking also had its director nominated.

Heh, looks like WTL pulled a "What's Love Got To Do with it?" (though WTL got more techs).

The best reason for WTL's snub is that it's an ok movie with terrific performances. I'm pleased the Academy got it right and awarded the actors over the film itself, which was a bit of a bloated mess. A rollicking, enjoyable bloated mess to be sure, but still a bloated mess.

Reese is from non-BP film too, so the only category that will prevent it from happening is Best Actor, with 3 out of the 5 from BP nominees.

Yeah, I know. I'm pretty sure he was going for Reese, Phoenix (and the others). So I avoided those two. :o

The perforamnces were much stronger then film (as I said in my review). AS a film its a standard story that really doesn't provide depth into the relationship b/w June and Johhny Cash, its a good film with great performances.

As I said in the contenders thread, it jsut doesn't have many of those people who "love it" behind it. It probably got more overall mentions than say, Munich...but I can't imagine that many voters putting it at #1 on their ballots. Which is what will push you to a nominations. Munich on the other hand has had very mixed reactions, but it has quite of few of those people whol WOULD rank it as the number one of the year. That's the difference.
