If you picked the Nominees and Winners for 1999
You know, I was inspired by Raffiki's thread and I thought I'd do my personal awards redux for the past couple of years. I want to start with 1999 because this is the year when I really got into movies and only in this and the subsequent years I feel I saw enough movies to compile a competent list. Since I don't want this forum to be clogged up with these redux threads, I plan on ctreating one every 1-2 months starting with this one. After two months at latest, everyone who cares will probably already have posted their picks, so we can move on to the next year.
Here's a comprehensive list of 1999 releases

Couldn't agree more, 1999 is probably my favorite year of moviegoing thus far.
I have seen all of the "important" movies for the list, except for Election and Boys Don't Cry.

I caught the last 30 minutes of it. Seemed good, but worse than Sideways. Will check it out eventually.
Also, finish your list eventually, if you get some time. I am certainly interested in it.

See Election now. Boys Don't Cry is good and it's worth seeing for the performances by Hilary Swank and Chole Sevigny.

hehe, wow, I realize I chose all winners from different movies.
I still need to think about my technicals, though I'm pretty sure it's Matrix-Mummy-Sleepy Hollow mostly.

Of 1999 contenders, it's worth mentioning that I still haven't seen MAGNOLIA, six years later.
And 1999...is not nearly as good as I thought I remembered it being.

I wasn't a fan of Topsy Turvy.... decent.
99 was a brilliant year for flicks. I'll up my winners when I get home tommorow.

You know, I think Kevin Spacey was great in American Beauty, and I don't know if this just may be the more comedic tones of that film, but I don't know if I would honestly consider his performance more layered than that of, say, Richard Farnsworth from The Straight Story, whom I would award over Spacey.
(I love The Straight Story. It's one of my favorites.)
It's a tough call between Annette Bening and Hilary Swank for me, though.

It was a close call for me between Spacey and Farnsworth. The characters are very different and each actor played his character perfectly. The final scene with Farnsworth at the porch and the scene of him in that bar are excellent. But Spacey has his scenes of brilliance as well. I would award Spacey because I simply cannot imagine anyone else at all playing Lester Burnham. He makes American Beauty to me.
Maybe if you find some time later you could post your full picks for the acting categories. I'm interested in seeing those.

Yes. It is that good, and is woefully underseen. That it hasn't even been released in Germany doesn't surprise me in the least....it barely got released in the U.S.
