Boston Society of Film Critics awards.
http://www.variety.com/ac2006_article/V ... =1&s=h&p=0
Brokeback Mountain" and "Capote" were the biggest winners in the 24th annual balloting of the Boston Society of Film Critics, announced Sunday.
"Brokeback" and director Ang LeeAng Lee bested "Munich" and director Stephen Spielberg in the picture and director categories.
"Capote" and "Brokeback" went head to head in the actor category, with Philip Seymour HoffmanPhilip Seymour Hoffman's uncanny portrayal of the author edging out Heath Ledger's taciturn cowboy.
Reese WitherspoonReese Witherspoon copped actress honors for "Walk the Line," besting Keira Knightly in "Pride and Prejudice."
"Capote's" Catherine KeenerCatherine Keener landed the supporting actress nod, winning for three of her four films in 2005. (The critics cited "Capote," "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and "The Ballad of Jack & Rose," but pointedly omitted "The Interpreter.")
Paul GiamattiPaul Giamatti's turn as the feisty boxing manager in summer release "Cinderella Man" landed the supporting actor nod, putting his perfperf back on the radar for Oscar voters. He won over Oliver Platt, of "Casanova" and "The Ice Harvest."
In the screenplay category, Dan FuttermanDan Futterman's work on "Capote" was lauded over "Munich," which went home emptyhanded.
Documentary nod went to the well-reviewed "Murderball," about paraplegic rugby players, with "Grizzly Man" the runner-up.
Joe Wright, director of "Pride and Prejudice," won the David Brudnoy New Filmmaker Award, named for the late Boston film critic and one of the founding members of the organization.
Wright's win shut out "Crash's" Paul HaggisPaul Haggis, as did the ensemble cast award to "Syriana."
Cinematography went to Robert Elswit's stylish black and white work in "Good Night and Good Luck," with "Brokeback Mountain's" Rodrigo PrietoRodrigo Prieto as runner up. Two Asian films slugged it out for best foreign language film, with the over the top comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" garnering more votes than the atmospheric "2046."

This is the first Reese win. But Keira was close. Oh this is going to be good this year.
Also notable for Munich higher placing and Giamatti win.

More mentions for Syriana and more proof that our opinions here aren't being taken into consideration.

Will Oliver Platt be up for a Best Supporting nom at the Oscars? It sure seems so.

Seems like kind of a Sarsgaard type nominee.

You mean like someone who gets critical acclaim and awards everywhere except from the Academy? Heh.

Seriously, Oliver Platt? Hey, maybe we should all watch Tomcats again to see how good he is! Jesus, this is mad.
Brokeback is riding its #1 status vividly now.
Munich is holding up quite strongly, good for #2.
Reese vs Keira will be close.
Match Point and The New World continue to blow it big time.

Seriously, guys, a few of you are starting to base the Oscars on this stuff and you're jumping the gun.

Should be a fun battle, except that Reese should beat Keira at Globe and distance herself as the frontrunner from there. I'd rather the two competitors be in the separate Drama and Comedy/Musical categories so that both can win Globe and set up a great match for Oscar. Unfortunately that won't happen.
If Keira somehow miraculously wins GG, then that'll be crazily interesting.

I agree. That's when the fun would start.

Maybe the best thing to do is close down the Oscar forum until mid-January when all the films will be in at least semi-wide release, everyone has a chance to see them and alot of awads are already given out.
Ya, we should wait till the contenders are all just about settled and then make our predictions.

No, the forum doesn't have to be closed down, but some of you have been getting carried away like people in the box office forum do everytime the dailies are posted. This list from the Boston Film critics doesn't mean anything. Oliver Platt isn't going to get an Oscar nom because a few nobody critics liked something that he was in.

Look, all I'm saying is we don't need to be reminded CONSTANTLY that it's too early to tell alot of things and that each critics award doesn't translate to revived buzz.
We know. We're just making the time pass by with speculation and discussion. You say your line almost certainly a couple of times a week. And I'm sick of it.

I think someones panties are in a bunch because WTL isn't quite as popular amongst critic's groups as he'd like. Just speculation.

Same old zack, with no intentions to ever change from sticking his nose in with his shitty comments, huh? Why did you create a new account again, to start fresh? How about actually trying instead of continuing being a dick.

Yeah, I'm pretty damn pissed that My Summer of Love hasn't been sweeping the acting, directing, screenwriting and bp nomination awards, too.
I think life would be so much better if the critics groups had real taste...like me.
