"The Acadmey is out-of-touch with mainstream America."
And Clooney comes out, right off the bat, addresses this, and gives what I thought was the best speech of the night.
I honestly never thought he was all that super duper cool. UNTIL NOW.

I like Clooney, he seems to have a warped sense of humor.
However, he was responding seriously to jokes made by Stewart. It reminded me of Sean Penn last year (although not as much of a killjoy as Penn). Plus, I was thinking that if he patted himself/Hollywood on the back any harder, he might break his arm off. I though the self-congratulations on being such a humanitarian was a little tacky.

I didn't think he was responding so much to jokes made by Stewart as he was to all the hoopla that's been made ever since the nominations were announced over the ever-widening chasm between Hollywood and Middle America.

What did he say? I only saw the end of the show.

I agree. I'm glad to be out of touch as well. I'd rather speak about AIDS when its just a wgisper, or award a woman for her performance, albeight stereotypes, when it wasn't en vogue, than sit around and be well loved. Film is now replacing litrature as the medium of message, and as disheartening as that is, I'm glad there's someone out there who takes their role seriously.

Dolce partly addressed it, DP, but he said something like...
Hollywood may be out of touch, but maybe that's not such a bad thing. They were talking about AIDS when it was "just a whisper elsewhere." And they awarded a black woman an Oscar when blacks themselves were still sitting in the backs of theaters. Etc. (He did it just a wee bit more eloquently.)
If any of you are fans of The West Wing, it reminded me of the live episode earlier this year where Jimmy Smitts's character made a similar analogy about liberalism and the like.

Ok, in the context of something like AIDS I'd agree with him. In politics Hollywood is probably is out of touch with middle america and I wouldn't regard that as a bad thing. My own political opinions vary in relation with "Hollywood" being what can best be described as a Libertarian. Still, O'Reilly would frame the issue in terms of politics, which isn't what I really care about.

Clooney´s speech was brilliant - including the "So I guess this means no best director for me" - which put in the spotlight how ridiculous this whole award thing can be. I didn´t want him to win, but only for having him up there, It was more than worthy.
And he was a good sport the whole night. His expressions were - on purpose - hilarious, IMO.

I have always really admired George Clooney. I find him charismatic, well spoken and although he is a superstar and hangs with other superstars, he seems like he is one of us. He smiles a lot, has fun and seems to know that he is lucky to be doing what he is doing. I always thought he would win an oscar one day,in fact, just to toot my own horn, here is a clip from my review of From Dusk Till Dawn:

Is there a better actor than George Clooney?, 28 June 1999

Okay, first of all let me just make this very clear. I have never watched one single episode of ER in my life ( honest ). So what I am about to say has nothing to do with some ridiculous love for the show. Having said that, let me tell you that George Clooney makes this film the classic that it is. It is a great fi, because of Tarantino's writing and Rodriguez' style and it has a fun story and the other actors are really good in it. But there is just something about Clooney that makes every scene that he's in believable. His interpretation of Seth Gecko is so amazing and so believable. Take for instance the scene in the bar when he is teaching Kate how to slam a shooter. He downs his own and then slams his glass down three times on the table. It is tiny subtleties like this that make his interpretation of his character so real. Every scene that he is in is a lesson in acting. He can take any dialogue, whether it is bad or good and hit just the right note. Take for instance the film A Thin Red Line. Now that was a really really really bad movie. But when he was on screen for 30 seconds, it made me forget that it was a bad movie and I was absorbed by what his character was saying. Now that is power.
Someday Clooney is going to win an Oscar and when he does people will look back at his career and say " You know what? He was really good in that weird Tarantino film. " And I'll say I told you so. This film is a lot of fun and it has a lot of twists and turns and plus Tom Savini is in the film and that is worth seeing as well. But for a clinic in acting and a great character he has to work with, see this film, you will be so happy you did.
He does have an intangible to him and although I didn't think it was the best of the supporting actors this year, I'm glad he won.

Good Call!!! Agree with what you said.
I think I thought the guy was so damn COOL the moment he tilted his gun sideways in Dusk till Dawn. And to think he's even potentially a better director than actor!!!

I thought his best quirky moment in From Dusk Till Dawn was when he was trying to get Danielle to do shots with him and he would slam his glass on the tabel three times...he is just about as charismatic as you can get.

When he was laughing at a Jon Stewart joke about him and then suddenly stopped and made that face, I was rolling on the floor!

George Clooney winning Best Supporting Actor was the fourth worst win of the night (behind Crash's three wins). Clooney deserves more than a fucking consolation prize. I'm glad he pointed that out in his speech.
And I can only reiterate what you all have said. Clooney is God.
PEACE, Mike.

I don't think there's anyone as likeable in Hollywood.
He's one of the only actors who seems to genuinely like what he does.

Haha, I've sworn before. Although I did feel like a New Yorker by the end of my trip. The car honking drove me nuts. I wanted to scream at the drivers to calm the hell down.
PEACE, Mike.

I ran across the street during a green light last time I was there. With a friend, right in front of the MetLife building during the day.
It was my fault, but I felt like taking the finger out.

baumer, I wish you would have been around more to help me in supporting Clooney. I agree with your comments, and I've been pushing him hard for ages at this forum, and I could have used you, because this Clooney love that has consumed the forum is all new, or at least nobody said anything until recently, while I was pimping him solo all that time.
WHERE HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN ALL THIS TIME???
This is my biggest triumph of the Oscar season, because I had him pegged for an Oscar for Syriana for quite some time while everyone else thought that Paul Giamatti was owed an Oscar win for some strange reason. I still don't get the logic that was behind that thinking, and I don't hate to say I told you so, because I TOLD YOU SO!
The Best Supporting Actor debate was just something that I really thought I made too much sense making a case for, and I was suprised at the number of members that refused to see the logic. The Oscar was never in doubt that it would be Clooney's, as I said all along, and if you recall, I even said Giamatti would win the critic and SAG awards, just to ensure that he'd get his nomination, the only thing he was owed. When it came to things like the Oscars or Golden Globes, however, it was very easy to see that it was Clooney's win. I also tried to convince everyone that Supporting Actor was where he would get rewarded for his incredible year in the industry, as it would tie the Clooney love in a neat package, and Clooney knew that was exactly what happened when he won. Great speech! He wasn't going home empty handed after having the best year out of anyone in the industry and with the connections he has in AMPAS, which I made a point to illustrate, he wasn't going to have to share glory for a co-written screenplay, no matter how much anybody that didn't like Crash wanted to believe that the academy would feel the same way and reward Good Night, and Good Luck instead.
