 The Oscar Challenge
The EW list got me thinking about a real list of movies that we should all see before Oscar night, and it seems to me that a better list of films to see would be all of the nominees for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
Is anybody else up to the challenge this year? Some movies, such as Junebug, might be hard to find now for those who haven't seen it, but most movies that have nominations for those categories should be easy enough to find.

I think I am. After all, I've seen a handful already and others I can check out through DVD or theater.

I'll keep track of those who will be seeing them all or try to in the first post.

I would definately love to try, although I will come up short with work. There are also films coming out before Oscar night which I yearn to see more (New World, Matador). EW's list the only I HAVE NOT seen are:
4. Capote
8. Syrana
11. Transamerica
12. North Country
13. Memoris of a Geisha
14. Pride & Prejudice
15. Match Point
16. Mrs. Henderson Presentens
19. The Squid and the Whale
20. Junebug
23. Cache
24. Shopgirl
Capote I will see before Oscar night. I won't see North Country (not out anymore), nor Pride (although I really want to!) nor Geisha (other things to see). I will likely see Match Point this weekend. Squid comes out on DVD really soon. Junebug comes out next week. Cache is hard because it probably won't get a theater release until after Oscar. Shopgirl... I really don't know why that one is on there.
The only one of those that I would conciously avoid is Mrs. Henderson Presents.

I'll be pushing Junebug on all of you guys because it comes out on February 17th or something like that. The movie itself struck a chord with me because of my southern roots, but it's the performance of Amy Adams that makes it so good. She gave the best line I've heard this season when she tells the other main actress in the film that she smells all nice and shampooey.

You should enjoy it, especially her. It was my second favorite performance of the year.

Sure, although I'll come up short. I should be at about 5 or 6 missing films by Oscar night.

I dunno. The new rumored date for King Kong is 3/28.
Narnia for early April
So I don't know how soon is too soon anymore.
Soderberg releases Bubble in a month or so. Theater and DVD released on the same day.

March 5th, I think. Brokeback isn't going to come out 2 days after it wins, I wouldn't think. It would sell like crazy on DVD, but it'll do that anyway, so they'll probably reschedule that one.

Those I can see, but why would they release it so soon when they can get more box office money? It'll be moved to at least May.

I dunno. Delays are common (A History of Violence was pushed back a week) but delays of a few months often are not.
We'll see, as for right now, this is the date that thedigitalbits and dvdfile and davisdvd are reporting, and they are not reporting it as rumor.
Personally, I think it would do superb DVD numbers if it out near when it will probably win a boatload of Oscars.

The Squid & the Whale is coming out March 14 now, unless they bumped it up from that date. Almost every site I've checked says March 14. Disappointing since I was hoping to seeing it before the Oscars. Shopgirl doesn't appear to have a DVD release date set at all yet, weird.
I guess I'm in for the challenge, depending on who gets snubbed I probably will have seen all the movies nominated in the 6 big categories.

Were we to use EW predix (just for argument's sake), these are the films in the big 8 (unless i made some big error):
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Cinderella Man
The Constant Gardener
Crash
Good Night and Good Luck.
A History of Violence
Junebug
Match Point
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Munich
North Country
Pride & Prejudice
The Squid and the Whale
Syriana
Transamerica
Walk the Line
Bolded are the only three I know I will not be able to see before March five. The rest I've seen, or will see (on dvd, or soon (Pride probably this weekend, for example)).
What other films could get in that aren't up there?

You can add me on the list too.
The only ones I haven't seen are...
The New World
Transamerica
Mrs. Henderson Presents
North Country
and I don't know if I'm forgetting anything. But I'll probably see the first 3 within the next 2 weeks!

Great thread.
But Mav, can you remove the WOKJ portion of the title to avoid any confusion with the Oscar contest.

I'm mostly out. I live in a small-town, 2 movies playing a week. Nothing small ever comes here.
So unless I do some hardcore downloading(I do a little), it's an impossibility.
