Re: Official Oscar nominations thread - anticipation!
Saying that Cooper picks good roles that the studios pushed heavily is kind of minimizing his talent.
But that Zellweger Fact... eek.

A24 must be glum. They now have to push A Most Violent Year without any Oscar prestige.

Gyllenhaal, Oyelowo and Fiennes deserved to be nominated over Cooper.

Re: Official Oscar nominations thread - anticipation!
LOL, Selma is the first iflm since 1951 (!) to get a BP nom with just two nominations and with the second nomination not being from a major category (screenplay or acting). The others, The Blind Side, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, A Serious Man and Four Weddings and a Funeral all got either a screenplay or an acting nod as well.

Re: Official Oscar nominations thread - anticipation!
With no editing nom (my biggest gripe by the way) there will sadly be no Birdman upset.

The Battle of the Five Armies' Sound Editing nomination ensures every Peter Jackson Middle-earth film is an Oscar nominee.
Meanwhile, Transformers: Age of Extinction is the first film in its franchise to not receive a single technical Oscar nomination.

Re: Official Oscar nominations thread - anticipation!
There is so much anger on the internet today about the lack of female and non-white nominations there were. I'm in the camp where I wish that there were some but in reality, these are the best of the best.
Other than American Sniper.

Re: Official Oscar nominations thread - anticipation!
I really liked The LEGO Movie, but seeing it get snubbed here is such a relief with the other nominees being more deserving.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 should win now, though The Tale of Princess Kaguya or Song of the Sea pulling the upset wouldn't be surprising. It's a very strong year for animated films.
I still need to see several more films to have much of an opinion in most categories (currently cheering for The Theory of Everything and The Grand Budapest Hotel).

It's sad that our society sees the Selma snub as racist and sexist instead of...you know a snub.

I haven't seen either "indie" movie but based on trailers alone, if HTTYD2 doesn't win, I hope it is one of these. Certainly not Big Hero 6 or Boxtrolls.

I understand the relevance of seeing black actors and actresses or female directors being recognized in this industry that, yes, is heavily favored towards straight white men (and women, let's be honest). But I believe certain groups believe that, with the intense racial news of 2014 still heavy in the minds of most, rewarding certain films and people with nominations would suddenly ease tensions? Beyond that, it's just a white-heavy year. If I were black or a woman, maybe I would feel differently, but I doubt I would care that all major categories were dominated by white people. Progress is not campaigning better for a movie.

It couldn't possibly be that the black or gay or female films of 2014 were just shit. Try harder and raise your game, bitches. And you might just get something next year.

Oscars are racist and ageist. They didn't nominate the 84-year old white director and instead nominated a Taco eater from south of the border. Disgusting.

 Re: Official Oscar nominations thread
Could Birdman pull a big upset? It has happened only twice that a film won both SAG Ensemble and PGA, yet lost the Best Picture Oscar - Apollo 13 and Little Miss Sunshine. But both did not have their directors nominated at the Oscars, Birdman does.

I wouldn't mind. When I see Boyhood, it will be because of all the awards hype it has been getting. Birdman actually sounds like something I would watch anyway.

It would be really silly if Birdman won Best Picture but Keaton lost. But then again I've always thought Boyhood just doesn't seem like something that would win Best Picture.
