Re: Avatar Will Not Be Nominated For Best Picture You Fools Club
If the announcement of the ten Best Picture nominee plan was an unfair blow to the club, the reveal of that who-cares trailer is like a beautiful, cleansing rain.
It's similar to how there was a tiny bit of my doubt in my mind about the "Dark Knight will NOT be nominated club" in the days leading up to the nominations before I realized that I was just being silly and that it, of course, did not stand a chance.

Re: Avatar Will Not Be Nominated For Best Picture You Fools Club
I think AVATAR has the potential to be a modern classic. It also has the potential to be a huge flop in every sense, an overbloated jerk off from a director in love with his own glory.
I think people are not ready for this, and the movie clearly isnt looking like its getting a great trailer response, but that said it does have 3d on its side, so there is saving grace.

Why does the end (the environment, the vehicles, the... concept) look like an odd mixture between the Kashyyk (sorry spelling) battle from Episode III and Arthur and the Invisibles?

Re: Avatar Will Not Be Nominated For Best Picture You Fools Club
I'm not a huge Cameron fan (outside some of his earlier work), but I still have a lot of faith in this. It's funny how the trailer revealed essentially nothing except the visual effects, and the fact that they were great but not mind-blowing is causing everyone to completely give up hope about its quality.
I mean, it was a pretty badly edited trailer, but I can't believe I'm the only one who sees a really good movie inside those two messy minutes.
wish i hadn't been traveling as the 15-minute sneaks were showing, though... that'd give me a much better idea. That said, I feel like the teaser was unrevealing enough that we won't really have an idea about its quality/BO until they release the theatrical trailer.

This club was kinda a lark before. Now that Shutter Island is out and I saw 30 minutes in 3D IMAX yesterday, good luck guys.

Re: Avatar Will Not Be Nominated For Best Picture You Fools Club
I was very cynical about Avatar's chances of getting anywhere near the Oscar, but mainstream reviews are trickling through, and they are incredibly positive. And if the film makes gangbusters through the holiday season and through January on good worth of mouth, I could see this sneaking in as the big 'cultural phenomenon' nominee, especially in a year in which 10 nominees are named. I'm not nearly convinced yet that it will be nominated, but now I think it possibly has a chance, whereas before I was 100% certain the Avatar Oscar hype was absurd. Also, I could be being premature here. Let's see how the Avatar reactions continue to unfold. What gets me is what McCarthy says: "Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see." So, if this can dominate at the box office in a similar vein to Titanic, I wouldn't be surprised if it elevates itself up in Oscar stature. Also, I heard the HFPA went gaga over the film, so if the Globes nominate Avatar, that could provide an important stepping stone. Or maybe not. Let's see! I find this all exciting. Peace, Mike

Re: Avatar Will Not Be Nominated For Best Picture You Fools Club
This club would be epic failure. There is no way avatar misses out unless it bombs at box office which aint happening fore sure. Plus it has been incredibly weak year when it comes to oscar worthy films. I think avatar would have made it even if there were only 5 nominees.

Avatar will win the whole thing, Cameron is 100% guaranteed to win BD.

Because the box office means so much to the Academy.

The buzz is deafening for Avatar the moment, which would NOT be true if the film was percieved as an underperformer. The box office is driving its current domination of the headlines. Conversely, the only knock against The Hurt Locker, the only thing keeping it was solidifying as the front-runner, is its lackluster box office.
