Post Re: WOKJ Consensus: Best Original Screenplay/Adapted Screenplay
We should finally have some variety for the original screenplay category:

Best Original Screenplay
Milk
Rachel Getting Married
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Wall-E
The Wrestler

(really thinking about Happy-Go-Lucky, which looked like a lock after winning NY and LA, but not sure which to drop)

Best Adapted Screenplay
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

I too was torn on this one because I could easily see Happy-Go-Lucky getting in here but I also can't see any of these missing. Burn After Reading possibly could, but I see it getting in.

I kind of don't see WALL-E getting a Screenplay nomination. The first half hour is...pretty silent. I mean. I absolutely adored the movie but I don't really think AMPAS are going to go wild over its script.

There's some precident for it...

Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille all earned Oscar noms for Best Original Screenplay.

Also, there's another science fiction film (dialogue free in some parts) that earned a Best Original Screenplay nom, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Q: What does Gladiator, The Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan, Return of the King, Fellowship of the Ring, Forrest Gump, and The Dark Knight all have in common?

I feel the same. I went with it but seriously considered putting Happy-Go-Lucky in its place instead.

I'd actually think the other way around: if it gets the screenplay nod, it's definitely getting BP. It could still get BP without screenplay on the strength of techs, Master & Commander style.

My wording may be strange on the above but if it gets BP (which it will), it has to get Screenplay. It's the movie it is because of its Screenplay.

It's techs are nowhere as strong as Master and Commander, which essentially played as a period film with balls.
