Frost/Nixon locked up? What?
At least Wall-E is in there.

Okay, so my current ranking (as far as being likely in for a nom, not the possible win):
1. Milk 2. Slumdog Millionaire 3. The Dark Knight 4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 5. Revolutionary Road 6. Frost/Nixon 7. Doubt 8. The Wrestler 9. WALL-E 10. Gran Torino

Well I read this article... http://movies.msn.com/movies/hitlist/11 ... ?GT1=28130It says "final two spots"... and I said WTF?! So I snooped around and read this... http://movies.msn.com/movies/hitlist/11-25-08_2/And just figured that the first three were their "picks"

The Reader had too much trouble behind the scenes and all...I gave up on it. It's my #11, though.
However, I don't really think anything outside of the Top 8 will matter.

However, I don't really think anything outside of the Top 8 will matter. Agreed on both counts. But those 8 are pretty tight (Well, not The Wrestler quite yet, but I have my eye on it).

Art and Costume? Even if it's very 70s faithful, is it really elaborate enough?

Anton Chigurh wrote: Art and Costume? Even if it's very 70s faithful, is it really elaborate enough? American Gangster got in against the usual suspects last year (period films, fantasy pics) in Art Direction. As for Costume, Milk spans 10 years and an entire spectrum of gay culture. I wouldn't bet a million dollars on those picks. But if there's a general move towards Milk, I don't see those two being impossible or even improbable.

If there is Milk love going around by the Academy, they may also give Alison Pill a nomination. I thought she was great and isn't the fifth slot in Supporting Actress kinda open still?

Oh, I don't doubt it.
Supporting your argument if anything. Academy voters could easily do the "every film that's nominated is an epic film" but they do have an eye for modern fare.

I actually think it probably has the best chance to win it... Anyway, agreed with those, except for Art Direction and Costume Design (they have a hard-on for older period pics and I'm sure Revolutionary Road, The Other Boleyn Girl, Australia, Benjamin Button and some others will provide aplenty). The omly "somewhat modern" recent film that was nominated there was The Devil Wears Prada and that was a movie about clothes afterall.

Honestly if there was justice, Josh Brolin and James Franco would both be up for Supporting Actor. Milk could go the route of Michael Clayton which got noms in BP, BD, BA, BSA, BSA, Screenplay, and Score. But it's a period film which adds an extra little something.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
I think Milk is in really kind of a win it or lose it all position. It can go either way.
Best case scenario, it wins:
Best Picture OR Director (we'll see a split this year) Best Actor Best Original Screenplay Best Score
Worst case scenario:
It wins nothing
I could see both happening.

A reason why I also don't see it winning is simply because it is not likely to win many Oscars overall. I know Crash pulled off a BP win with three wins in total, but can SM even win three? The Academy giving it Picture AND Director is very unlikely, IMO. It's time for another split and I doubt the love will be that big. Anything else it has a shot at winning? Definitely not acting. Cinematography will go to either TDK or Benjamin Button, certainly not SM.
I hear what you're saying but, if it really starts looking like a BP winner, Danny Boyle can win too. Now it may seem unlikely to you, but it'll feel different if the movie really has the momentum. Hmm, it needs to become a phenomenon in that case. No less than $80 million in gross...

There are just too many little cool films this year (which is a good thing). If we're going with the mulitple nom theory, then Rachel is out.

5 out of the first 6 reviews for Benjamin Button at RT are fresh, but the average of 6.8 is a little low.
I'm really warming up to the idea that Milk will emerge as the frontrunner a month from now.
