No stand-out wins for me. Would have liked to have seen something CRAZY in one of the big categories. Even an Amy Adams win would have sufficed.
Good awards show, though. Lame jokes kept to a minimum, not a lot of filler, Globes should take a cue.

Did Ordinary People win 4 only?
The Last Emperor won 9, Kramer vs. Kramer won 5 (But 2 were acting), and Ordinary People did win 4.
Chariots of Fire only won 4 with no acting.

I guess this makes Best Picture a little more interesting but Crash is so much more an ensemble piece than Brokeback, not exactly surprising it won. Not surprising that Brokeback was shut out either, I thought its only win would come from Williams tonight but with Weisz's win at the Globes that was a shaky pick.
and a big yawn for the acting categories, the only interesting race now is Supporting Actor. Curse you SAG and Globes for making the most exciting race (Supporting Actress) entirely dull! I'm still crossing my fingers for either Amy Adams or Michelle Williams.
Bring on the noms, hopefully there will be some (pleasant) surprises there.

Meh...
I'm chuffed Hoffman finally got recognised, but still, it would've been nice to see Ledger get awarded for Brokeback. I'm sure my opinion will change the moment I see Capote, but at the mo', consider me non-plussed!
And Reese was hardly spectacular in Walk The Line. I genuinely can't understand all the praise she's receiving.

So it looks like Chariots and Platoon in recent history.

Rachel Weisz was as supporting as it gets in The Constant Gardener. Nowhere close to a leading role. How much screen time does she even have?

Agreed and Fiennes was the lead as he spent the movie investigating.

For the first half, she's pretty much the centre of the film. While she probably has less screentime than Fiennes overall, I'd certainly class her as leading.
The only problem is that the majority of her screentime is shown in flashback. Had the film used a more conventional narrative, I'd wager her lead status wouldn't be in question.

Oh and as for TV...
My hate for Housewives is approaching seething.
Arrested Development deserved it, but they could have at least given it to Earl or something.
And Lost's second season, as a whole, has not been superior to what Six Feet Under did in its last season.

I think it's clear that the acting categories are set now after watching the awards.
Supporting: Weisz & Giammati
Actor: Hoffman & Witherspoon
The only thing I could take from the show could possibly be that Crash win Best Picture instead of WTL or BBM.
Oh, and Ledger's bumbling over his presentation of His own film shows he is certainly not ready to be a Best Actor award winner in my mind.

Speaking of which, was that Six Feet Under's last chance at award recognition?

You know, I'm still not exactly sure.
I believe Six Feet Under's fourth season aired in the same time frame as its fifth did, and that was eligible for the following year's Emmys.
So I'm not sure. I'm hoping, though.

I finally watched Cinderella Man last night, and although I think Giamatti did do a good job, I do agree that a lot of this is just Sideways guilt. He's good in CM but not great or anything.
Not that that makes me not appreciate his win. I'd be perfectly happy if won, I just think if, say, Clooney's more deserving, give it to him.

Brokeback has 3 wins in the bag (Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay), and I believe it will get 2 more wins else where, most likely among editing, cinematography, and score, for a 5 total.
Hoffman and Witherspoon are as lock as they get. Rachel is getting there after winning both GG and SAG, but I still can see an upset from Williams, even though it's becoming more and more unlikely. Jeffrey Wells must be smoking victory cigar for appearing to nail down all the frontrunners early on.
As a supporting performance, I think Giamatti did a terrific job in Cinderella Man, so I won't have any problem with him winning.

Yes, his role is nothing special. The performance could have been pulled off as well by any struggling character actor. The role had no depth or weight to it at all. Giamatti has now been taken care of and all Sideways guilt is out of the way.
George Clooney is obviously smiling about that.

Agreed. She was good, yes, but I didn't think she was spectacular either. I actually thought Phoenix was the best performance in the film, and he's not getting half the praise she is.
She's a lock for the Oscar, yes.. I guess I don't really understand it, but it's a win for Walk the Line all the same.

MDB won two acting awards. loyal was looking for examples of best picture winners with 4 or fewer wins and no acting wins.

hehe..I'm sure he is.
I know this isn't in the "modern" era, but I think The Greatest Show on Earth only won two awards including Best Picture.
