Bar 1995 the tradition was that one of the two GG awarded films would end up getting an Oscar. Then the last 4 years - oscar has been completely different. Will the trend continue or revert to the old way...

I'm very happy for Kate and her double win. I think she just became the front-runner for Best Actress for Revolutionary Road.
I'm also happy for Rourke. I'm not a HUGE fan, but The Wrestler actually looks very good, and I loved that he thanked his dogs. I hope Penn will win the Oscar though.
It was cool to see IN BRUGES win something.

Re: Golden Globes Countdown & Show Thread
Kate was the frontrunner for awhile now. She's owed, she's due, and with Streep there (multi-winner) and the rest being from smaller films, without a flashy winner this year (Best Actress is kinda boring this year) it seems like the perfect time to reward her.
She'll walk away with an Oscar this year, but not 2.

Re: Golden Globes Countdown & Show Thread
Winslet winning two awards tonight is the fucking greatest thing in the world, and it was the ONLY surprise of the night. It was so unexpected because Winslet had already been given the obligatory consolation win with Best Supporting Actress, so for the HFPA to award her Best Actress as well is wicked wonderful. I'm also extremely grateful to the HFPA, because hopefully this will mark the beginning of the rest of the organizations rewarding Winslet as Best Actress, the award she rightfully deserves.
As a side note, I couldn't disagree more with all of the people here asserting that Winslet winning is some sort of "make up" award for her whole career. Winslet certainly churns out great performance after great performance, but her performance in Revolutionary Road this year is NO exception. I wouldn't hesitate to call it her best, most nuanced performance of her career. She's really good, and she deserves to win.
I am so happy right now. The rest of the night may have been predictable (Slumdog orgy, 30 Rock orgy, John Adams orgy), but the win for Winslet was so unexpected for me and yet so deserved. Congratulations Kate!
P.S. Her speech was terrific, too. She was clearly shocked, as I'm sure she assumed the same thing we all did: that she was out of the running for Best Actress once the HFPA awarded her Supporting Actress. But her emotional bits with both Leo and her husband Sam were just perfect. I loved it.
Peace, Mike

First:
YAY SLUMDOG. I adore the film so much.
I was so happy for Kate Winslet when she won twice! It's about time she finally starts winning some of these things. Hopefully, she can just win one of her inevitable two nominations.

Re: Golden Globes Countdown & Show Thread
It's awesome that Winslet won both Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress.
And yeah, when she mentioned Leo (13 years) and loving him, teary eyed moment for sure.
I think Hathaway was a very slight favorite for the Oscar over Streep, but I'm starting to think that with Streep being so overdue for the Best Actress Oscar, as well as Winslet (nothing compared to Streep though), she is at a slight disadvantage now being new to the scene. I think the Academy is going to award either Streep now (who I see as a slight favorite right now) or Winslet (but not if she wins Best Supporting Actress) before Hathaway.
Streep > Winslet > Hathaway is my guess at this moment for Best Actress.

She'll walk away with an Oscar this year, but not 2. If that's the case then she'll be getting Best Supporting. She seems most likely to win for The Reader, IMO.

Whoops, totally forgot about her win (though it's been 25 years). Hmm. Still going to stick with Streep > Winslet > Hathaway right now though since Winslet hasn't been mentioned much at all excluding tonight for her role in Revolutionary Road so far.

Re: Golden Globes Countdown & Show Thread
It's hard to believe that these two wins tonight are Kate's first Golden Globe wins! She wasn't joking when she said she does a lot of "not winning". Only the guilds (SAG) has shown her any sort of reward with a win for Sense and Sensibility way back in '96. She had been nominated for the Golden Globes 5 times before her first wins tonight, the exact same 5 nominations she also has received at the Oscars. Now that she has finally won at the Globes, I would like to see her break the curse and win that Oscar, preferably the Best Actress Oscar.
I still have the awful feeling that the Oscars will just reward her Best Supporting Actress and then move on with it, which is such a shame. I can't see her winning both awards at the Oscars like the Globes (but just out of curiosity, what is the precedence for double acting wins in a year? Or is there even any precedent?). Or worse, I'm afraid she'll split votes and end up empty handed on Oscar night.
Peace, Mike

Re: Golden Globes Countdown & Show Thread
aside from Seth Rogen's delivery sucking, nice enough show. Despite being quite a celebrity, Winslet managed to at least come across as truly humbled by her dual wins, in fact, all of the acceptance speeches were quite nice. Would have preferred to see something besides Slumdog take one of its three big awards, but the Globes don't = the Oscars, so this doesn't set anything in stone. Oh, and I'm officially pumped for Brüno.
