I hope he's pushed to lead for Musical/Comedy at the Globes for Pineapple Express so he can get double noms.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008 Discussion
I still can't believe he's older than Rogen by like four years. Even in the Freaks & Geeks days.
None of this manners, though, because we all know the winner in this category.

Have we ever had anyone being thisd much of a lock in this category this decade? He seems even more certain than Bardem or Freeman.

I mean, Bardem was 100% also. You can't get more than a 100% lock.

I think the story of Harvey and Scott comes across more powerfully than the one between Harvey and Dan. I also have Brolin down for Best Actor (W.). No need to double nominate him. Right now, BSA is as crowded as BP.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008 Discussion
Film Experiece is floating the idea of a triple Best Supporting Actor noms for Milk. http://filmexperience.blogspot.com/2008 ... actor.htmlThat's basically unheard of for very good reason. Though I did love Emile Hirsch's work.

I've floated this, but the category seems WAY too packed for that to really happen. If it does though, it's definitely following in the path of the only other three films to achieve it.

For that to happen, perfomances I really liked would need to be blocked, Marsan and Downey. And Hoffman unfortunately wasn't moved to Lead. Ledger has a nom and win, signed sealed and delivered.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008 Discussion
Even a double nomination is hard in this age. Babel had a lack of competition that managed it. But tons of great ensemble flicks with deserving nominees screwed over at least one person who deserved to get in. The Departed had Nicholson, Wahlberg, DiCaprio. Fellowship had McKellan, Holm, Lee (I'm not even sure if the last two have been nominated before). Everyone forgot about Kevin Bacon in Mystic River. No Country For Old Men had Tommy Lee/Bardem, and that was a weak category.

I saw Tropic Thunder today and Downey Jr. really should get one. He won't but eh.

I'm thinking Kline/Fish Called Wanda for it. Well, maybe not with that film's big time praise, but RDJ's comeback and all...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008 Discussion
I don't read the script. The script reads me. An Oscar year where TDK and WALL-E could very well be nominated for Best Picture, and The Joker and Kirk Lazarus nominated for Best Supporting Actor, ranks up with the best Oscar years ever.

If ANY blockbuster gets an acting nomination, I would say it's Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder. And that is VERY much pushing it. Hey, I might not be 100% wrong!

Sure, but I think it'd mean Slumdog won't steamroll its way to BP.

Ledger's sympathy vote gives him the pity lock for supporting actor Oscar, making this category the most boring of all...

I mean it's not even about him being great (he is great, though). The competition is the weakest in years, it seems.

Maybe the latter, but certainly not the former. I mean it's not even about him being great (he is great, though). The competition is the weakest in years, it seems. Heath Ledger was indeed a great actor, but this was far from his best work - - as I wrote in my review: "the villain's been ever the plum role, but Heath went the easy route with full make-up, drag (no less), and craziness". Any idiot can play a cackling crazy over the top bad guy, but only Heath Ledger could have put the incredible nuance into his portrayal of the title character in Casanova, amongst many other fine roles. This Oscar will be nothing but a pseudo-Thalberg...

bradley
i would love to watch tdk with you just so i can point out all the little subtle things that heath's dialogue, mannerism and acting that complimented the character and went eons beyond just simple craziness.
which is actually one of the reasons why i've never been totally big on heath winning supporting, not because he didn't do a great job but the entire character of joker comes together because of the acting, the specific dialogue provided by the screenwriter and the wonderful direction provided by the director on how the character needs to be mannered. its one of those odd performances that in my opinion that went beyond just the portrayal by an actor himself.
but yea .. i'd love to watch this with bradley. he may still not like the character but i'd love to show him why the character was so much more than just a crazy portrayal.
