I'll just say Gladiator is a pretty good blockbuster, but it really has no business winning awards except for People's Choice or MTV. I loved Chicago when it first came out, and then gradually I realized it shouldn't have won Oscar because it's just way too light, no matter how entertained I was during that 2 hours, but my grade of it has dropped accordingly since. It doesn't mean a film has to be serious to win award, but it should have some meat; if it's a comedy, be a black comedy like Dr. Strangelove.

Shakespeare in Love is brilliant.
I really liked Crash actually Although I think it by far didn't deserve to win.
But of the three A Beautiful Mind is the worst winner, especially when considering what lost to it...

In my opinion, the statement above is rather dumb. Is Ebert a homophobe because he liked Crash more and would have voted for it? What is most Academy members thought the same way as him, as in really liking Brokeback Mountain, but loving Crash more? You know, the Academy consists of just around 6,000 people or so...that is not really a huge number, so it is possible that these particular people simply liked Crash more, at least a certain percentage of them. To say that the quality of the movie had NOTHING to do with the upset is an ignorant statement, especially if you put it out here as a fact. I don't know if homophobia played a big role, it certainly might have. But to say that the pure preference of people was irrelevant is stupid.

I don't know what's sadder. The fact that Crash is replaced with "trash" or the first searched item includes "I'm really glad Crash won though. I haven't seen it yet, but it is suppose to be amazing..."

Honestly, looking at the Best Picture winners over the last few years
1990's
* 1990 - Dances With Wolves
* 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs
* 1992 - Unforgiven
* 1993 - Schindler's List
* 1994 - Forrest Gump
* 1995 - Braveheart
* 1996 - The English Patient
* 1997 - Titanic
* 1998 - Shakespeare in Love
* 1999 - American Beauty
2000's
* 2000 - Gladiator
* 2001 - A Beuatiful Mind
* 2002 - Chicago
* 2003 - Return of the King
* 2004 - Million Dollar Baby
* 2005 - Crash
I've agreed less then half of the time with the winner, in fact most of the time do we really think the "Best Picture" won.
As much as I like BBM, when I saw it I didn;t see the Academy giving in the BP win, even though I wanted anything to beat Crash. Makeshift called it early and as much as I hoped it wasn;t ture, the writing was on the wall for the Crash win. For reasons I don;t understand, people like Crash. I used to disgreeing with the Academy, none of the winners for Best picture from 00's are my choice for the Best Picture of the year.

A Beautifull Mind was a good movie, but not great. Even though there was technically more outrage over the SIL and Crash wins, disturbingly few people were passionate or really cared much for ABM. It just kinda won out of default.

i ALSO THInk Annie Hall, Ordinary People, Chariots of Fire and Rainman are bad picks, some of them are downright terrible, some are just wrong. I get why Rainman won, but I think Mississippi Burning is a head and shoulders better film and Parker definitely should have won best director that year. Ordinary People? Give me a fuckin break. Empire Strikes Back is one of the greatest films of all time and it wasn't even nominated.

Using Ripper's list, I thought I'd highlight the recent Oscar wins that I completely agree with:
1990's
* 1990 - Dances With Wolves
* 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs (JFK)
* 1992 - Unforgiven (A Few Good Men)
* 1993 - Schindler's List
* 1994 - Forrest Gump
* 1995 - Braveheart
* 1996 - The English Patient (anything else, hehe)
* 1997 - Titanic (L.A. Confidential)
* 1998 - Shakespeare in Love (Saving Private Ryan)
* 1999 - American Beauty
2000's
* 2000 - Gladiator
* 2001 - A Beuatiful Mind (Moulin Rouge)
* 2002 - Chicago (The Pianist)
* 2003 - Return of the King
* 2004 - Million Dollar Baby (Sideways)
* 2005 - Crash (Munich)
In the parenthesis I put the films that I would have prefered to win.

Exactly, let's be honest the Academy tends to get it wrong, and King is right in his article Crash is jsut the sort of ilmthe Academy picks, so its win is not the shockere veryone makes it out to be. DO I wish somethign else won but Crash, yes, did it surprise me no and all the debate after it what happens more of the time. Remeber when CHicago won, A Beautiful Mind, we often get pissed about certain films winning. This year though we have Ebert and the critics bickering as well.
I know for me, I don't mind Crsah winnign as much as being told that watching Crash should change my life or that I am jumping on some anti-Crash bandwagon or that I am just Anti-Crash because I am Pro-BMM.
I am not surprised Crash, I always hated it, and I wanted Munich to win, but I knew that wasn;t goign to happen. I actualyl skipped the oscars because I was sure there woudl be no surprises and Crash would win best picture. I wasn't goign to give up sleep for that.
Seriously though, the Academy often picks the worng film,w ho hear has actually seen Ordinary People? The only thin gI knwo about it that it won, I've never actually bothered to watch the film. People only tlak about it to say, why the hell did it win.
It will be interesting to see what people say about Crash and BBM in ten/twenty years. Look at Titanic, ti wne through a backlash stage, no people admit how much they like, it can ebb and flow.

I agree there have been lots of bad choices over the years. Also I am glad that others are being pointed out other than the original 3 from this thread.

To the general public yes, but here on KJ we've seen older films liek The Godfatehr which have stodd the test of time. I list 50 films from before 1980 the many KJers have seen, many of them not BP winners.

It depends... are we talking about the best of the nominees or the year's best?
out of the nominees, the ones I agree are in bold with personal pick in parenthesis, in case I don't agree with the winner:
* 1990 - Dances With Wolves
* 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs
* 1992 - Unforgiven (The Crying Game)
* 1993 - Schindler's List (The Piano)
* 1994 - Forrest Gump (I'd be happy with either Gump or Fiction)
* 1995 - Braveheart (it's between this and Sense and Sensibility)
* 1996 - The English Patient
* 1997 - Titanic
* 1998 - Shakespeare in Love (I'd be happy with either Shakespeare or Ryan)
* 1999 - American Beauty
2000's
* 2000 - Gladiator (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)
* 2001 - A Beuatiful Mind (Moulin Rouge)
* 2002 - Chicago (The Hours)
* 2003 - Return of the King (either this or Lost in Translation, but this was the only year I didn't have a clear favorite in the race)
* 2004 - Million Dollar Baby
* 2005 - Crash (Brokeback Mountain)
I used to agree alot with their choices back in the 90's...

 Re: Worse recent Best Picture winner out of these three
Shakespeare in Love shouldn't even be in this poll. It's a great movie.
Kramer vs. Kramer over Apocalypse Now is by far the worst decision in the history of the Academy.
