I have a feeling The Prestige will be this years big Oscar film.

Big as in walking away with Best Pic and Director, a handful of acting noms - maybe a win - and a couple of technical ones to boot.

I would love that. Seriously, this is my most anticipated film of the fall. Bale and Jackman in a Nolan film? Insane. This is as close to Batman vs. Wolverine that we're gonna get.

It really depends on the way they handle a film like that. Im very curious to find out how that turns out, cant wait to see a trailer.

Hopefully this year we can get back to movies that dont have to have a signicant message in whats going on in the world today. Got pretty tired of that last year.

I have faith in Nolan's abilities. He's got a killer cast, and a cool plot. It'll be awesome.

Disney isn't the greatest at promoting their films for Oscar.

Nolan's films have never made that much of an impact with the Academy.

The primary cast has been overlooked by the Academy thus far.

The release date is good but not the greatest...

I basically don't see any reason why this is a shoo-in for any major nominations. Something to look after, sure, but not a shoo-in or a very likely candidate at this point.

I know. I'm doubting it'll be recognized by the Academy at all. But I still think it'll be a great movie, one that is sadly overlooked.

Your first point I can't argue with. Ditto the second point, as none of Nolan's films thus far have made much of an impact with me either (I liked Memento first time round, but it fails to stand up to repeat viewings, Insomnia was an overrated, well acted Al Pacino starring Ashley Judd thriller and Batman Begins I really, strongly disliked).

As for the primary cast being overlooked thus far, I'd see that as more of a positive. If Bale or Jackman had been honoured before, I'd put them as lower priorities for the academy. But both are well regarded actors without a nom to their name at this point. All it'll take is a well received Oscar bait-y film to get them on the shortlist.

The release date, I feel, is completely irrelevant.

To clarify, I can't explain why I think this film will win Best Pic, I've just got a strong gut feeling. If it pays on the promise of the premise and the talent involved, I can't see it not being a strong contender.

I can see The Departed walking away with 10 or more nominations:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actor-Leo DiCaprio
Best Supporting Actor-Jack Nicholson
Best Supporting Actor-Martin Sheen
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
Best Art Design
Best Editing

I would need to check previous noms for the techs but all seem possible, sans Costume and Art Direction.

You know, I would like to see two supporting male noms from the same movie. When was the last time? When Bugsy had Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley? Supporting actress had fared better.

[spoil]I was actually just trying to fill up the last two of the ten spots I promised, hence the costume design and art design  [/spoil]

The Blood Diamond opens Dec 15, 2006

The WB film about "conflict diamonds" in South Africa is directed by Edward Zwick and stars Leonardo, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou. If reviews and box office are good TBD could become a player during awards season.

Oh thats coming out in 06'? Always thought it was coming next year. Im interested to see how that film turns out, might've moved it up a bit cause they know they got something good on their hands.
