My big surprize.

The director of Capote got nominated.
Maria Bello gets shut out.
Only 3 songs in the song category (first time since 1988).

and the biggest surprise of the morning...

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
George Clooney - SYRIANA
Matt Dillon - CRASH  WTF!!! Bana had better performance than this fuck.
Paul Giamatti - CINDERELLA MAN
Jake Gyllenhaal - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
William Hurt - A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
How was Bana gonna get nominated for best supporting? He was a lead.

Oh yeah  D'OH!

A big surprise is the omission of Good Night and Good Luck in the editing category. Since they edited the real McCarthy seamless into the movie I thought this was a given.

The biggest surprise for me was the Academy throwing The New World a bone in the cinematography category. It does come off as a slap in the face though, to think that everything aside from its gorgeous visuals was unworthy of recognition.

Runner-up surprise was Star Wars' snub in visual effects. I guess they were tired of the obscene over-use of cgi that has become a staple of the prequels. Narnia could be accused of the same excesses, but I think it made it because of its brave attempts at integrating all kinds of animals, giants, minotaurs, centaurs, eagles and humans into that battle sequence at the end of the movie. That was something that hadn't been seen before, whether you think it was well done or not is kind of moot.

For me:

The directors matching up 5/5.
Walk the Line missing out.(I predicted Munich, but actually seeing this happen still shocked me quite a bit)
Star Wars nothing for SFX.

Truly surprising....

William Hurt getting in, although the 5th slot was really up for grabs.
Maria Bello not getting in.
No Editing for Brokeback
Star Wars missing out on Visual FX

Maybe I will realize more later on.
