It's highly doubtful that the race would come down to the two of them. It's a long year. Lots of movies.

I wouldn't dispute that. It's just Andaroo's arguments re Flags/Departed I disagree with.

Um...sorry, but GONY was nominated for ten Oscars and DiCaprio has already starred in three Best Picture nominees, two of them directed by Scorsese...

Not to rehash recent history but that doesn't have quite the wow factor it might at first seem. Or, to put it another way, how can a terrible film like 'Gangs' score 10 Oscar nominations? Answer: when Harvey Weinstein is in charge. Apart from Harvey and Day Lewis no one even knows where all those votes for 'Gang's' 10 nominations came from. Then there was that infamous article in the run up to the Oscars penned by Robert Wise in which the vet director praised Scorsese and GoNY and how deserving they were of their Oscars. Turned out, after some digging (LA Times wasn't it?) that the article was actually written by publicist named Murray Weissman. Small wonder GoNY went 10-0 on Oscar night. And DiCaprio, though talented, simply wasn't strong enough to make either Vallon or Howard Hughes convincing figures of interest. Maybe The Departed will play more to DiCaprio's strengths as an actor - put a fresh spin on his boyish looks perhaps.

The key word here being 'if'.

Its already being called a "loss" adaptation, so I think we can forgot if. At this point I'd be surprised if it is at all like the superb orginal film.

Also, I hope Mark wahlberg is rarely on screen, one good performance does not a good actor make.

I actually think that Robert DeNiro's The Good Shepard is just as much of a pre-determined BIG FRONTRUNNER as both Flags of Our Fathers and The Departed as of now.

No big deal either way to me but I was just curious.

Maybe this is a long shot, but how about Christopher Nolan's next movie, The Prestige.

I don't know if Nolan's actually doing it, but it has an incredible cast (Christian Bale, David Bowie, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine, and Hugh Jackman). It is a sci-fi/action, though.

Nolan is one of the safest bets, I think (maybe not in terms of awards buzz, but critically).

Also: Hail Caesar, Zodiac, World Trade Center/Flight 93 (maybe?), and Idlewild (big suprise?)...

I think Little Children has potential. I mean Todd Field's last movie(In The Bedroom) had great reviews and garnered many nominations. I think this has a great cast (Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly among others) and has an intriguing premise. Should be one to look out for.
