Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
Thoughts:
- Happy with all of the acting wins.
- Loved Redmayne's speech. He pulls off the charming Brit much better than Cumberbatch, who is generally just awkward in my opinion.
- Disappointed that Boyhood lost both BP/BD. It deserved to win at least one.
- NPH was serviceable but he peaked with the opening. The John Travolta joke was aces.
- Musical numbers were mostly a bore. Gaga was on point vocally and I enjoyed the Andrews reveal at the end.
- I felt like this year more than usual was very preachy. Race relations, women's rights, suicide prevention, immigration, disabilities, etc... All of these issues are important but I'm not a fan of how it's almost become mandatory that a winning speech include an obligatory plug of a social issue. It comes across as self-serving rather than sincere.

Whiplash winning 3 was a nice surprise.

Boyhood should have at least one of BD/BP.
Linklater deserved something.
Also, Big Shitto 6? Undeserved. Convinces Disney that they did something right with their superficial "racial diversity" and "story". Terrible film.
Redmayne made having MND believable. Look at his body. He deserves it because that isn't easy.

I can't believe that after three and a half hours of music, hit and miss one-liners, and long speeches, the night ended with what was basically a magic trick.
But enough about Birdman winning BP...

He was in a rage over The Grand Budapest Hotel's wins, but then Lady Gaga soothed him with her rendition of "Edelweiss." He curled into a fetal position and whispered, "Ze more Aryan ze berry, ze sweeter ze juice."

Overall, I think Keaton and Linklater should've won, but whatever.
The biggest con job of the night was Interstellar losing Best Score. What a JOKE.

Seriously. It was used by most to just prove how "classless" he is. I thought it was all in good fun. He's not THAT big of a jackass. (he probably is though)

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
I am of two minds on it: I am sure it is fine as a friendly jab between collaborators/friends, but it is perhaps a bit uncomfortable in a general context, considering the political climate and the fact most people are not going to go, "Oh, a bit of mischief between the director and star of 21 Grams! They must be pals!"

Well, maybe you will learn to appreciate it more once you turn 20 in six years or so.

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
Good show this year. Did not enjoy it as much as last year but there were some good moments. NPH was not bad, but at some points his jokes fell flat.
Best Win: Julianne Moore for Still Alice. Also all of awards for Whiplash. Worst Win: I think Iñárritu winning three awards and Linklater getting none is kind of a travesty. But my feelings for Birdman aside, I can see why so many people are entranced by it. And I'm kinda happy that a weird original film won.

Re: 2015 Oscars - 87th Academy Awards (Live Viewing Thread)
LOL, so Boyhood only won one award!? It's such a shame really. I mean, never will a director ever attempt anything so grand in future if he knows that it won't get recognised come the Oscars. But I am glad Birdman won Best Picture and Best Director. It was a great film. End of. Whiplash won Best Supporting Actor. All is right with the world. Interstellar won Best Visual Effects. But not Score or Sound. The big winners were Birdman (winning four biggies), Whiplash, and Grand Budapest Hotel, of which only Birdman and possibly Whiplash will be affected in terms of box office. But anyway, three great films. Glad they got recognised.
