The film never says that torture is an effective or reliable means of gathering information. Merely that it occurs.

To a certain extent, the film does show torture as a useful tool, in my opinion. After being beaten, water-boarded, and deprived of sleep, the one detainee does give them the key piece of information during the scene at the picnic table: the identity of bin Laden's most trusted courier. Would he have ever given this information to them without the harsh treatment?

Still, overall, I would argue it is objective, and I do not believe Kathryn Bigelow is being deceitful when she argues for a philosophy of depiction =/= endorsement. I believe this is the story Mark Boal was told during his extensive research period, and this is how he and Bigelow depicted it in the film, but now people in power (senators on defense committees, etc.) are racing to say, "Oh, no, no, no, we would never condone such behavior. This is pure Hollywood fabrication."

Also, the film has such an intriguing uncertainty in its very DNA, which is lost on its harshest critics. It opens with the real September 11th recordings, arousing a certain moral rage, but we cannot help but question at the end whether bin Laden's corpse is a satisfying catharsis after years and years of extensive, expensive, and dangerous searching, and perhaps nothing can tie Americans' aching and complicated feelings regarding September 11th into a neat bow.

I almost get the feeling there are people now who truly believe torture is never an effective tool during wartime. Their belief seems to go beyond just being against the use of torture, which is admirable; they seriously cannot accept the idea useful information can ever be extracted using it, when, of course, it can, or it would have not be a consistent component of human history.

Of course. But just because a character in a film promotes an ideology doesn't mean the film itself promotes it.

I haven't seen the movie, but does the torture scenes happen during the Obama administration or Bush's? If it was Obama then it is lying because Obama's administration has said they never used torture.

Bush. It is around nine or ten years before the raid on the compound.

Ok I wasn't sure. I just know Obama's people were mad about the movie. Maybe it was because it showed administration officials advocating for torture.

Lets not be naive, torture will happen with any administration and they will know bout it they will just play to the cameras and fake moral outrage.

I am not sure about that. Obama has made a very push away from that type of interrogation. I guess under extreme circumstances we could see it happen.
