Re: Official 2010 Academy Awards Discussion
I thought Steve Martin was hilarious. Alec Baldwin landed a few, but he was extraneous.
Other than the awful dancing and a few strange, time-minded production choices (not going over the BP nominees one last time), I thought the ceremony was ace.

Very happy for The Hurt Locker, although it shouldn't have won screenplay. Overall, like the monologue and acting presentations, but not much else.

Alec Baldwin seemed to be backstage doing coke most of the time.

Did you miss the Best Score presentation? Eh. I actually didn't HATE it. Though they should never do it again. Maybe the Academy is introducing a Best Choreography Award next year?

Re: Official 2010 Academy Awards Discussion
One of the most boring Oscars i've seen so far. The intro was crap, the performances in between was dull and the presentation in general was lifeless.
I much prefered last year's setup with past winners honoring new winners for all acting nominations.
There weren't that many highlights tonight. Sandra Bullock's speech i thought was good though the other getups and presenters were samey. And how predictable, Tom Hanks presenting one of the big categories, though it's so abrupt that he launched straight into the winner without honoring again the nominees.
Hurt Locker winning best picture got more and more certain i thought, after it snared so many awards including the two Sound categories which I thought Avatar might be rewarded in.

Martin's Avatar joke at the close was funny. He should just host by himself next year. Baldwin didn't add anything.

Re: Official 2010 Academy Awards Discussion
I was very annoyed/disappointed by the decision to just announce The Hurt Locker at the end and not honor the other nine films once more. I know the ceremony was running long, par for the Oscar course, but, still, they should have given the runners-up one more chance to shine. By the end of the ceremony, with the Hurt Locker craziness at the end, many less-movie-obsessed viewers no doubt forgot smaller films such as A Serious Man and An Education even existed.

Re: Official 2010 Academy Awards Discussion
Pros
Steve Martin was great as always, Alec Baldwin was a nice sidekick (The paranormal activity spoof they did was hilarious) John Hughes Tribute was so out of left field but I loved it. RDJ and Tina Fey Ben Stiller Sandra
The only real cons of the show is that all the actor wins were evident since the Globes, and since the Globes, we knew all the speeches except Sandra would be overly long and uninteresting. Most of the wins themselves were pretty obvious. They need more comedic presenters. They get Two unappealing tweens to talk about the legends of Horror (I thought that was what Sigourney Weaver was going to do when she talked started talking about Alien) The hosts were not given enough material (There intro seemed very short, and NPH song was unfunny taking up half of it)
"And over here the Inglorious Basterds section, and here the people who made the movie"
This show just seemed to be all over the place with different styles of past oscars combined in a weird combo that didnt fit.
I hope the ratings were strong though, I want Martin back.

Re: Official 2010 Academy Awards Discussion
I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, nor do I want to. Not my type of movie.
I would've voted for Avatar had it's screenplay and emotional depth be just a little bit stronger and more credible...the music i felt was sorely lacking. i'm feeling quite flat towards Avatar, take away the visuals and it's not any better than any other blockbuster that's out there.
While the Academy skimps away from blockbuster extravaganzas yet again....I'm glad Avatar didn't win Best Picture though because i don't think it was earned. Yes, the achievement and effort was undeniable but this movie doesn't hold a candle to past great blockbuster + Best Picture winners such as Forrest Gump, Titanic, and Lord of the Rings: ROTK. It just doesn't have the emotional weight nor the character story to register as a BP winner.
The fact that Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all-time also makes its achievements seem less impressive i think when the picture itself doens't really measure up to the money it makes. The only blockbuster I think that's worthy of being honored in the past decade have been Lord of the Rings and The Dark Knight.

Id put Passion of the Christ above both of them, and completely not even considered for Academy Awards. I agree, this feels like the Best Picture that no one has seen. I would have put Basterds as the ideal choice, and completely overlooked.
